
Paterson Says He Will Continue Even Amid Scandal
New York Gov. David Paterson refuses to step down, even though scandal appears to be destroying both his reputation and administration. Paterson is said to have either directly or indirectly pressured Sherruna Booker to drop domestic violence charges against her then-boyfriend David Johnson, who is Paterson's aide. While Paterson does admit to having communication with Johnson, it is yet to be proven what the actual details of the messages were to the woman. [Newsday]
Protest Held in Face of Racist Actions
At the UC Irvine campus, about 250 students protested the recent spate of racist incidents on the campus. Kicking off the indefensible behavior was a "Compton Cookout," which mocked Black History Month with ghetto themes and antics. Next up was a pillowcase turned into a noose at one of their libraries. Same-Sex Couples Obtain Marriage Licenses in D.C.
Starting today, same-sex couples can obtain marriage licenses in Washington, D.C. The marriage bureau is expecting about 200 couples to apply, but the couples will not be able to legally marry until March 9. [Washington Post]
In Survey, Teachers Value Students, Support Not More Money
According to a survey, teachers are more interested in school reform than an increase in their paychecks. The report, which surveyed more than 40,000 K-12 teachers, concluded that "non-monetary rewards" such as strong support systems and opportunities to work with other colleagues are highly valued.
