If I were President Barack Obama, I would be break dancing in the Oval Office. Former Republican House Majority Leader Tom Delay applauded the actions of his Republican colleague Jim Bunning, who chose to block the extension of unemployment benefits for millions of Americans. In his comments, Delay effectively argued that Americans want to be unemployed, because having unemployment benefits gives them no incentive to go out and look for a job.
Yes, I was stunned to hear these words. But then again, perhaps Delay has decided to officially marginalize himself and say all the things he wanted to say when he actually had a position of relevance within the federal government. Instead, he has allowed us to peek in to the minds of his colleagues, who are probably thinking the same way. Here are Delay's words based on his interview with Candy Crowley:
You know," Delay said, "there is an argument to be made that these extensions, the unemployment benefits keeps people from going and finding jobs. In fact, there are some studies that have been done that show people stay on unemployment compensation and they don't look for a job until two or three weeks before they know the benefits are going to run out."
Host Candy Crowley: Congressman, that's a hard sell, isn't it?
Tom Delay: It's the truth.
Crowley: People are unemployed because they want to be?
Delay: Well, it is the truth and people in the real world know it. And they have friends and they know it. Sure, we ought to be helping people that are unemployed find a job, but we also have budget considerations that are incredibly important, especially now that Obama is spending monies that we don't have.
Now that's the Republican Party I'm accustomed to hearing. Disconnected from the plight of the common American man or woman. Willing to bail out large corporations but not average citizens. The party that Obama ran against, and the one that is trying to sneak its way back in to the White House. Any American who makes less than $100,000 dollars per year is going to be highly offended by Tom Delay's statement, and it's not going to work out well for his party. While he might be a bit of a Republican outcast, the truth is that he is one of them.

Boyce! Wake up. Who's been bailing out the large corporations these days?? It's your bud, Obama. Reality is reality. I have friends that have collected the benefits and then started really looking in earnest for a job just before benefits ran out. Whether it is smart to state the truth on this matter is up for debate...I'm sure you know some people that have done the same thing with the benefits timetable.

I can understand budget considerations when debating unemployment extentions, but Boyce is right in pointing out the conservative Republican disconnect with struggling Americans. Recently, having been unemployed for 5 months I came to know that struggle first hand. While there are those who choose to "milk it" (unemployment), I believe most try hard everyday to find gainful employment. We often define ourselves by the career path we've chosen. I think its an unfair judgement to think that many of us would take pride in collecting unemployment as we struggle to feed our families on the meeger money the goverment gives us for unemployment. To say that we are "milking it" is to say that we are not a proud people and that we are not out to seek the inner confidence that comes with self-sufficiency. Tom Delay is just plain wrong.

I can remember being laid off from my job years ago. I Immediately began looking for employment because the unemployment was not enough to live off of. I had a job by the time I received my first unemployment check. If Delay thinks that unemployment supplies the recipient with a living wage, it just shows that he and the rest of the Republicans are totally out of touch with reality.

I have something to say; I can not believe or will not accept that
the "SYSTEM" is "CORRUPTED" and a lot of "BUREAUCRACY" going on this
office or department; that is very shameful of how the system is
running or what is going on and how "MINORITES" are been handle at
this department or office.

Boyce, you patsy, You can't be so ignorant to think that there are people milking this as much as they can before they accept a job. I personally know scumbags that have turned down jobs because their benefits were extended....THEY WANT TO BE UNEMPLOYED.
Are you going to be fair and let people know why Bunning did not support the bill? It was because there was no way to pay for it.

Oh really?? You must not be unemployed and looking for a job that will pay a decent enough wage to pay all your bills. I'm sure he supported the war in Iraq without any regard to the millions it costs per day which, by the way, were not factored into the budget figures when Bushie was in office. Gimme a break!

Why go to work when you can get rich collecting unemployment. Yes $350 a week and i'd almost clear $20k. I am an independant and cannot believe idiots like this ran our country into the ground.Does he really believe people would rather stay home for 20k a year when they were making 3-5 times more. I would like to have a Congressmans rough lol job doing nothing. Talk about people that don't want to work, Congress should look in the mirror. Our leaders need to be lined up and shot for treason. Scumbags.
