If I were President Barack Obama, I would be break dancing in the Oval Office. Former Republican House Majority Leader Tom Delay applauded the actions of his Republican colleague Jim Bunning, who chose to block the extension of unemployment benefits for millions of Americans. In his comments, Delay effectively argued that Americans want to be unemployed, because having unemployment benefits gives them no incentive to go out and look for a job.
Yes, I was stunned to hear these words. But then again, perhaps Delay has decided to officially marginalize himself and say all the things he wanted to say when he actually had a position of relevance within the federal government. Instead, he has allowed us to peek in to the minds of his colleagues, who are probably thinking the same way. Here are Delay's words based on his interview with Candy Crowley:
You know," Delay said, "there is an argument to be made that these extensions, the unemployment benefits keeps people from going and finding jobs. In fact, there are some studies that have been done that show people stay on unemployment compensation and they don't look for a job until two or three weeks before they know the benefits are going to run out."
Host Candy Crowley: Congressman, that's a hard sell, isn't it?
Tom Delay: It's the truth.
Crowley: People are unemployed because they want to be?
Delay: Well, it is the truth and people in the real world know it. And they have friends and they know it. Sure, we ought to be helping people that are unemployed find a job, but we also have budget considerations that are incredibly important, especially now that Obama is spending monies that we don't have.
Now that's the Republican Party I'm accustomed to hearing. Disconnected from the plight of the common American man or woman. Willing to bail out large corporations but not average citizens. The party that Obama ran against, and the one that is trying to sneak its way back in to the White House. Any American who makes less than $100,000 dollars per year is going to be highly offended by Tom Delay's statement, and it's not going to work out well for his party. While he might be a bit of a Republican outcast, the truth is that he is one of them.

What needs be done is to take away all on Delay's assets, housekeepers, chaufers, etc and see how he likes trying to support himself and his family on $265 per week. Also you have to pay taxes on that big unemployment check, what a joke. Our , government and I mean "government", since we our the ones that are taxed literally to death. Taxed for income, sales tax on everthing we buy, estate taxes, Property tax, automobile tax etc. So many of these politicians have had it so good for so long that they are completley living in another world. Lets see how well Delay would make on Unemployment Benefits.

The scumbags you know must be homeless and live in the park. I don't know anyone that is getting that little money who isn't looking for a job and doesn't have a hustle to keep eating and looking for a job.

Tom Delay is just saying what nobody wants to hear! That the United States of America has actually become a welfare country. C'mon guys, just listen to the guy! What he says and the studies he's referring to is actually closer to the truth than what all of us are willing to accept. There are of course missing jobs for somebody's particular skills but mostly, jobs are available for everyone. The only problem is we have become so choosy and pampered that we only want to take on jobs that we are comfortable with and which we have gotten really good at. But that's just not the ways things are right now. You gotta do what you gotta do. Problem is, the unemployment benefits is too good to refuse too. Why work when you can sit and watch tv all day and receive money for doing that. The truth hurts but its the truth...

@ Jonas...
Wow, people like you really burn me up! You think that people really want to sit at home and collect a fraction of their usual pay--not really. Truth be told there are people who don't care to find another job right now, especially with the unemployment checks still rolling in, but then there are those who actually want a job and can't find one. It's your kind of thinking that believes its ok for Americans to fund everyone elses war or send millions of dollars in aide to other countries but can't stand it if our government actually helps its own people. Our government should be willing to help the American people. Amazingly, we are being diplomatic when we help others but are socialists when we help ourselves. You're an idiot Jonas, think about shit before you "type" it

I am just going to assume you are an ignorant Republican too. You probably work in government or a tax supported financial firm. Sure there are people that milk the system but have you spent any time recently unemployed? Probably not. I have a graduate degree and 14 years of accounting experience and still got laid off due to budget cuts. Most likely thats more professional and intellectual experience that you are used too. I spent months out of work, almost lost my house and had two children to feed. You are just another spoon fed brat of this country with no clue to what happens in the real world. I would love to run into one of you loud mouth ignoramuses in the street. But then again, you tend not to walk amongst the rest of us.

beenthere makes the typical liberal argument; he or she insults the one making the argument without refuting the facts or presenting facts that would contradict those relevant to the point being made. I am also horrified that someone who claims (keyword is "claims") to have such vast accounting education and experience is ignorant of the basic economic principle that if you pay people to do something, they will do it, even if that "something" is not working. When I got my accounting and finance degrees economics courses were required, maybe beenthere went to, let's just say, a "different" school. That being said, Brunning goes too far, cutting unemployment benefits is absurd and hurts good people who are trying to find work and need those benefits to survive.

O.K. Jonas so what you are saying is that we need to accept jobs that pay us 5.25 a hour and we are head of the household. Please tell me honestly when your rent is 850 to 1000 and electric is over 200 and food bill a month is over 300 and your kids need school clothes and dental and health cost and you just lost a job paying 20 dollars a hour what is that job at wendy's or taco bell going to do for you. Service jobs are what you are hearing about. I wished you try and raise a family on that. You can't do it no matter if two people are working it. You people that don't do it always have a opinion about someone else. You know like they are lazy and they don't want to work. If I found a job right now that was paying 20 dollars a hour I surely would go and get in that long line of people that you say won't work and isn't looking for work.

Tom Delay is totally wrong, the reason they keep giving us extensions is because there are not any jobs. USA is loosing massive jobs every month due to the idoit government policies, we unemployed are not happy about being let go, it is very embarassing to me. We have already made massive cutbacks on our lifestylee, and some even lost their homes. If they cut me off unemployment, my family and i will be on the street, I wont be able to scrape enough to pay my mortgage, credit cards, or heat bill. Thats all unemployment really helps you out with anyway.
