If I were President Barack Obama, I would be break dancing in the Oval Office. Former Republican House Majority Leader Tom Delay applauded the actions of his Republican colleague Jim Bunning, who chose to block the extension of unemployment benefits for millions of Americans. In his comments, Delay effectively argued that Americans want to be unemployed, because having unemployment benefits gives them no incentive to go out and look for a job.
Yes, I was stunned to hear these words. But then again, perhaps Delay has decided to officially marginalize himself and say all the things he wanted to say when he actually had a position of relevance within the federal government. Instead, he has allowed us to peek in to the minds of his colleagues, who are probably thinking the same way. Here are Delay's words based on his interview with Candy Crowley:
You know," Delay said, "there is an argument to be made that these extensions, the unemployment benefits keeps people from going and finding jobs. In fact, there are some studies that have been done that show people stay on unemployment compensation and they don't look for a job until two or three weeks before they know the benefits are going to run out."
Host Candy Crowley: Congressman, that's a hard sell, isn't it?
Tom Delay: It's the truth.
Crowley: People are unemployed because they want to be?
Delay: Well, it is the truth and people in the real world know it. And they have friends and they know it. Sure, we ought to be helping people that are unemployed find a job, but we also have budget considerations that are incredibly important, especially now that Obama is spending monies that we don't have.
Now that's the Republican Party I'm accustomed to hearing. Disconnected from the plight of the common American man or woman. Willing to bail out large corporations but not average citizens. The party that Obama ran against, and the one that is trying to sneak its way back in to the White House. Any American who makes less than $100,000 dollars per year is going to be highly offended by Tom Delay's statement, and it's not going to work out well for his party. While he might be a bit of a Republican outcast, the truth is that he is one of them.

I may be a Texan, but this takes the cake for sheer gall. If he could sack what he is spreading-the fertilizer co-op would be out of business. This is why congress had to get him out. The Dallas Morning News help wanted ads used to take several pages-not they cover maybe a quarter page. I guess they don't expect anyone to apply so they just do not run ads now. If that makes sense-you could be pals with him too.

I'm curious? What kind of salary do you make while in a Federal Penitentiary?
Just go away, you are hurting the moderate leaning Republicans, you Sarah and the rest.
Even Olympia Snow and Susan Collins have abandoned us - do we even exist anymore? Is it time to become, (God do I have to say it), an Independent. You though I would say Democrat, didn't you? Well....keep it up.

Well having a dog in this fight i suppose gives me a reason to comment.I have been underemployed for 15 months and know many who are not having any luck finding employment in their given field. I also know quite a few who say I'll be damned if I take less and yep you guessed it they are damned.I think delays comments applies to some but a lot of people are just plain staying mad and waiting for THE CALL. Life is a shit sandwich and ya gotta just take a bite out of it.We had a similar problem before and we saved for this one, but it's not easy and I feel for those suffering who didn't have a back up plan.

There are plenty of jobs.
You must be willing to work for minimum wage or even work for a little less than unemployment will give you. However why would anyone work for less than unemployment to "help" the United States of America. I have had 11 jobs in the last 2 years.
I worked at the same place for 28 years and used to make $32 an hour. My wages for the jobs that I have had for the last 2 years ranged from $8 to $14 an hour (presently). No more house, a cheap car and my medical insurance is over $200 a month. But I have a bycycle, my back pack and fishing pole. I can enjoy all of these things right out the door of my apartment. Married father of two. My wife has MS.

For someone, who has had his salary and benefits paid for by working tax payers, Delay should have more concern, when those same tax payers are now out of work and need help. His arrogance and pompous diatribe are inexcusible. Isn't he and his party, biting the hands that have fed them?

Boyce: Great job spinning DeLay's statement into something he didn't say. I'm sure you'll get a pat on the back from Rahm Emanuel.
Studies have proven that many (not all, but a statistically significant proportion) unemployed wait until their benefits are running out before finding another job. If you extend the duration of benefits, these people will consequently put off taking another job.
Boyce, are you denying the validity of these studies? If so, would you please turn in your PhD? Typical Democrat spin: ignore facts and reality, inject emotion and hyperbole.

No, you conservatives/Republicans (same thing no matter what you say) crackheads are the masters of spinning. Case in point, Fox News...

Delay is an idiot if he thinks that people on unemployment are on it because they want to be, we just don't have a choice just like I don't have a choice when my son tells me he needs new shoes and I have to tell him no

Tom Delay is a punk and speaks out of his ass. I have friends who have been looking hard for work for that last year or so and the jobs have not been there. Sure there is a small minority that take advantage but the majority have been looking and looking hard.
Hey Tom didn't you vote in favor of Free trade with no jobs program. Great job ship jobs overseas and then call the underemployed lazy. Your why I detest the GOP and Tea Baggers.
Hope you stay out of Jail Tom ...
