Really Detroit? Is it becoming clearer now why the city filed for bankruptcy, why they didn't have enough money to bury their own dead, why Kwame Kilpatrick can only "put a little something down" on his million-dollar debt he owes the city?
Conyers, a former Detroit city councilwoman and the wife of U.S. Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., was sentenced to more than three years in prison yesterday for bribery.
Before the hearing, Conyers moved around the courtroom blowing kisses to supporters while wearing dark sunglasses. Her husband, who has an office in the federal courthouse, was not in the courtroom. Spokesman Jonathan Godfrey said he didn't know his whereabouts. Obviously, he won't be the one to count on to keep her commissary filled.
Conyers yelled in the packed courtroom that she planned to appeal and that she wanted to withdraw her guilty plea, suggesting that she was the victim of "badgering" last year, when she admitted taking cash to support a Houston company's sledge contract with the city.
Conyers, 45, is the biggest catch so far in the FBI's wide-ranging investigation of corruption in Detroit city government. Nine people have pleaded guilty, including two former directors of the downtown convention center, and prosecutors have promised more charges are coming.
"Bribery is a betrayal of trust," Cohn told Conyers, after announcing a 37-month prison term for her "egregious" crime. She quit the council, after pleading guilty in June.
Conyers' plea deal was limited to taking bribes to support a contract with Synagro, worth $47 million a year. The recent trial of her former aide, Sam Riddle, though, exposed a series of alleged schemes involving others making payoffs to do business at city hall.
Earlier this year, jurors at the Riddle trial heard secretly taped phone calls, where he and Conyers discussed money, bank deposits and how to split cash.
In a November 2007 call, Conyers told Riddle:
"You'd better get my loot."
On another call, businessman Rayford Jackson, who passed bribes to Conyers for her sludge vote, said, "You're my girl. Don't forget that."
Do you think that law enforcement and the FBI are targeting black officials-Councilman Marion Barry in D.C. (again?!), Sheila Dixon in Baltimore, everybody and their step cousin in Detroit-or is it just time to clean up shop in politics for everyone?

As to the question in the article (Are black officials being targeted). Just when I thought racism would be left out of an article...BAM! there it is. I searched the internet and what do you know, I easily found that Hispanic, German, Asian, white and Jewish officials have been targeted as well for bribery and various other greed driven crimes. I hope this helps.

Wow, dummy. Why don't you READ the freakin' paragraph.
The writer is pointing out that nobody is targeting Conyers or any of the other elected officials, but that it's time to start cleaning house.
Imbecile.

First off this should be an exchange of opinion and information. That said and leaving emotion at the door...I actually did read the entire paragraph. If you were familiar with my posts you would see I am fair and impartial. The initial draw (of the paragraph) is wether one feels BLACK officials are being targeted. My response to that is clear and informative. My intent is not to offend only to remove color from an issue. The longer we allow our judgement to be clouded with color delays and at times prevents when true justice can prevail. If Ericka would have left her emotions at the door the article would have been more productive. Thanks for the interest and god bless.

If you want to go to a site where they don't discuss race and culture then look up Kum By Yah.com or some stupid crap like that.
This site is for black people to TALK ABOUT BLACK ISSUES!!!

We simply need to pray for Detroit. This ex-elected official is sad. I went to their city council web site one day or on YouTube and actually watched their council meetings. She actually called the President Shrek as she yelled at him, "Shut up Shrek." The following week middle school students reprimanded her for her behavior. So long, "Corrupt Conyers". Is it something in the water?

Please do pray for Detroit. But while you are at it, please pray for Kansas City, Chicago, DC, LA, NY, and many other U.S. cities. Corruption lives abroad. I am really disgusted with the negative comments towards Detroit because it is a majority black populated city. The last I checked, the entire country is covered with corruption and a bad economy. I am happy that those who seek self preservation over the people and government, which they chose to serve, are being convicted; no matter what their skin color may be. I just hope that the prosecutors in many of the other cities will stop hiding behind the corruption and step forward as Wayne county DA Kim Worthy has. She has the guts and intellect to clean house. Bravo Ms. Worthy and keep up the good work!
