While I didn't agree with the editor's assertion that guilt by association should matter to any of us, he may have had a point. The truth is that even guilt by association can get us into serious trouble. The case of former Republican Presidential hopeful Ron Paul is one that reminds us that the Republicans are having a great deal of trouble shaking their perceived connection to the very worst parts of America. The release of Paul's newsletter from the 1990s only makes matters worse, as the newsletter presents a goldmine of incredibly racist statements and accusations that would make Rush Limbaugh blush.
Some of the most interesting statements in the newsletter are presented below:
"Boy, it sure burns me to have a national holiday for that pro-communist philanderer Martin Luther King. I voted against this outrage time and time again as a Congressman. What an infamy that Ronald Reagan approved it! We can thank him for our annual Hate Whitey Day."
"Just after a basketball game ended on June 14, blacks poured into the streets of Chicago in celebration. How to celebrate? How else? They broke the windows of stores to loot, even breaking through protective steel shutters with crowbars to steal everything in sight."
"If you live in a major city, you've probably already heard about the newest threat to your life and limb, and your family: carjacking. It is the hip-hop thing to do among the urban youth who play unsuspecting whites like pianos."
In addition to making outlandish statements about people of color, Paul presents other interesting information, such as a poll in which he claims that only 5% of African Americans have sensible political opinions. He also mentioned that "if you have ever been robbed by a black teen-aged male, you know how unbelievably fleet-footed they can be."
To say that Ron Paul's newsletter is ignorant would be an understatement. Also, it is my greatest hope that this revelation is enough to ensure that the Republicans do not give him serious consideration for the presidency. What is most interesting, however, is that Paul's newsletter brings an ironic and almost refreshing sense of honesty into our conversation about race in America. Paul's statements are not as scary as the fact that there are millions of Americans who agree with him. Many whites have equally "interesting" beliefs about African Americans, which lead to a serious disrespect of our humanity. We are seen as fleet-footed car-jackers who love R&B music, rather than a heterogeneous group of Americans who have the same flaws and capabilities as anyone else. The goal is not to believe that all black people are good: The goal is to know that we are normal.
I am not sure what ridiculous story Ron Paul's advisers are going to come up with to try to explain this one away. But the truth is that you probably won't see Paul making a serious run for the presidency, and that is a good thing for America.

Folks before you get yourself all worked up in a tizzy, read the third post by JP, he is absolutely positively correct.
This is a false story. Paul wasn't diligent in monitoring the content. Relax
Watkins, Where is your shame, you two bit race hustler. Is it really that important to you to be the preeminent race hustler in the nation. You, Eric Dyson and a host of others thrive of off this BS.
You just wait for some white person to slip up and say something dumb or even be accused and you water at the mouth. And even if he did say it or feel that way. SO DAMN WHAT!

Oh please Ron knew exactly what the newsletters were about and to do the cowardly thing blame it on his bigoted friend Lew is definitely newsworthy.
I now see why Mccain and Romney laughed at his #$% they knew he was a phony. Also the punk had the nerve to say I am not racist as my best friend from 20 years is the head of the Austin NAACP way to go Ron LMAO.

Rik,
You're calling Dr. Watkins a two bit race hustler? Are you truly serious?? He has earned BA and BS degrees with a triple major in Finance, Economics and Business Management. Really a race hustler? What does he have to gain from that? This man as a masters degree from the University of Kentucky and a doctorate from Ohio State University. He's a professor in finance at Syracuse University. Does he really have time to be a race hustler?? Oh! I see, ALL black folks are hustlers and gang members - even if they're highly educated. Thank you for enlightening us all with your IGNORANT comment.
Dr. Watkins dialogues openly and honestly about race - if you don't like it - tough.
Lastly, what kind of politian allows an article to be written in his name WITHOUT checking it? That means he's just plain STUPID and doesn't deserve my vote in the first place.
lol

@ Eve
what da hell are u talking about, ranting like lunatic. Just because a person has a degree, doesn't make them right. Nor does it make them moral.
I expressed in opinion just like you, and by the way, i don't have a Phd, but I'm highly educated, and working on it on my PhD. So now what?
So take your bigoted, small minded, sixth grade responses somewhere else.

I personally do not think this is lazy journalism, I've never heard about Mr. Paul's statements. I am sure I am not the only one, so the wirter has taught me something. We must come to the realization that in America many of us have issues with race, but we will not get to a place of understanding if we do not speak about it. Who ever wrote the newsletter for Mr. Paul obvioulsy has issues with African Americans in America, and Mr. Paul has some responsibility because he has associated politically, professionally, or otherwise with this individual. The funny thing is Conservatives always blame the problems of America on Afican Americans. Drugs, Teen Pregnancy, Welfare, Gangs, etc. Truth is you have just as many whites who have these problems in their neighborhoods. White kids are on drugs, are experiencing high numbers of Teen pregnancy (Bristol Palin), Whites, Hispanics, and Blacks receive welfare with the state of our economy, and gangs have no racial divide. The moral of this story is we need to stop blaming one group of people for problems or the perpetuation of such problems. We need to ban togethter and fix the problem. That is what being a politician is really about! Conservatives need to stop being self-serving BIGOTS!

smac,
lol, you just said that there are bad and good blacks and bad and good whites. Then you say Conservatives are BIGOTS? Hello? Am I the only one who see's this inconstancy? It's time we stop calling groups of people names. Every group has a bad/good mix. Also, it always makes us feel better about our own sorry selves when we can put down another group or individual. That's just plain lazy. Enough! You want to make this country better? Get involved. Educate yourself. Learn to help others **Without Accusation** because, most likely, your own life ain't so pure either.

Ron Paul may not have said these things nor sanctioned them, and they may be "old" news. However, the fact remains that there is still a serious racial division in America between black and white, and with the advent of a Black President, it appears white people are using their feelings of loss of control to express blatant racist sensitivities. There are just as many young white males and females committing unspeakable crimes daily as there are black youth. The problem is the media doesn't focus as strongly on white criminals and they do black. That's not new and probably will not change until the faces, minds and hearts of leadership in the media change. It is disheartening to see that attitudes on both sides of the fence have not changed, even in a whole new millenium. And the media perpetuates the negative stereotypes rather than do what they should: TELL THE TRUTH. However, the truth isn't "news" and isn't popular as it doesn't boost ratings nor sell newspapers and magazines. Proof-positive that's it's still all about the dollar. It's sadder still to think that we may be relegated to this kind of negative sterotyping for eternity. While we hope that isn't true, all things indicate that white folks will still hate on us and we will return those feelings in kind. While I know that Black people are far more forgiving and willing to embrace our enemies should they show themselves willing to do the same, some joker like Ron Paul or his ilk will continue to spout negative rhetoric about who we are as a people rather than look past our color and just see us as AMERICANS. Black people have just as much investment in this country as any white man, woman, chick or child. We helped build it and it's a very stupid, short-sighted individual who will judge the race by a few. We want the same things for our children as any other person, white or otherwise. Not everyone aspires to be a rapper, jock or entertainer. There are black doctors, astronauts, scientists and politicians who make daily contributions toward making this a better world. Again, these aren't the people we hear about because they aren't "news" and perpetuating the negative stereotype allows whites to think they can continue to keep their feet on our necks. Despite all of this, it is a new day and we all have a responsibility toward upholding our country and the values upon which it was built. Let the ignorant remain so as they appear to be blissful in their ignorance and it allows them to retain their thoughts of superiority. The reality is so far from whatever they think, it's almost comical. Rather than constantly defending ourselves against the lies our alabaster counterparts continue to perpetuate, we should adopt the attitude our ancestors taught by saying "WE CAN SHOW YOU BETTER THAN WE CAN TELL YOU."

Wow!! Great post Katy. I agree 100% !!
It's unfortunate that the one thing it would take for White folks to understand what it is to be black in America they can never be... And that is black. We need to stop looking to them for their approval. They did not create us, nor do they sustain us. (contrary to what they arrogantly believe!!) We have enough intelligence and wealth collectively to do a heck of alot of damage in this economy. But here's where I have a problem with our own community; we hate on each other alot. We spend time with petty jealousies, and we accept (often thru our silence) what we do to each other. I mean do we see as much outrage about black on black crime as we do when it is white on black?? We have to come together within our community, or we will never be able to truly sustain ourselves in this world.
