There has been much reported on the disagreement between Tavis Smiley and The Rev. Al Sharpton about whether the White House should adopt a "black agenda," and focus on issues that specifically address the Black community.
President Obama has turned to Sharpton in recent weeks to answer increasingly public criticism in the Black community over his economic policies and subtle approach to addressing race. Sharpton has been to the White House five times since Obama took office, most recently this month as part of a small group meeting with economics advisor Lawrence Summers.
There are signs that Sharpton will play a role in mobilizing the black community in this fall's midterm elections. According to the Wall Street Journal, Democratic National Committee Chairman, Timothy Kaine, conferred with Sharpton about going to black churches and neighborhoods to mobilize voters.
There has been criticism of Sharpton's "relationship," with the White House, most predictably by conservatives, but also by some Black leaders who resent Sharpton being annointed as representation for the whole of the black community by some. White House officials demur, saying that Sharpton is one of "many leaders we continue to speak with on the issues of the day."
Professor Cornel West said in an interview that Sharpton risked becoming a "symbolic insider," whose views would be trumped by White House support for economic policies geared toward boosting Wall Street and away from Sharpton's grassroots constituency.
But Sharpton has been broadening his horizons, so to speak, most clearly symbolized by his work with uber-conservative Newt Gingrich. He and Gingrich toured schools in several cities last year with Secretary of Education Arne Duncan to promote programs to close the racial achievement gap.
Why should White House conversations with anyone about issues affecting the Black community be an issue?

From Jermiah Wright to Al Sharpton? That is not a step up; Wright at least is not a publicity wh**e! This relationship is going to be much more trouble than it can ever be worth; President Obama, you can't prove your "Blackness" by dealing with Sharpton the Media Hound.

The problem with some people, they orate as though they're preaching in church. Loud bravado viewpoints to a captive audience who sit and shake their heads yes as they reply amen. America needs representatives who answer questions and solve problems not another hot aired ("insider") blowhard. The president may not get another term if he believes going to black churches and neighborhoods to motivate voters will get him elected. He was not elected this way. Rome was not built in one day. A concerted effort to clean up those neighborhoods and get the youth into those churches would be a positive legacy. Accomplish that, then you would be the man.

Sharpton is such a fraud. He has no business on the inside of the White House. What are his qualifications?

Why is it when one of us steps forward and is able to be a voice for for us(as a people) at the table of power,we as a people are ready to disparage them? He might not speak for all of us because we are not a monolyphic group, but he does speak for some of us and we should respect that. Are we progressing when the white man speaks for us? I don't think so! We as a group have many leaders, hence confusing messages even to us, can you imagine how the controling race views us! As being confused. Can you say Willie Lynch! ONE LOVE !!!!!!!!!!

Am I in the wrong place? I am sure a lot of these comments about Al sounds like jealousy. The man has a right to be where God Almighty gave him 2 feet to walk. It is God Almighty who gives feet to walk and not man. We have become such dictators. Put some LOVE in our hearts, because when all else fails, LOVE will always find THE way.
Please stay free and do not enslave ourselves with the alleged master's rhetoric. We would have been healed from this controlling speech, if only we took the time to be healed from the TRUE MASTER.
Watch how HE moved amoung the political individuals of that day. You would do well to follow HIS type of thinking, because all other
is sinking sand. Let us build on a solid foundation. That solid foundation is not a window dresser, but the Creator and Maker of all things.
Remember Saul in the Old Testament and Israel cry for a King. Freedom is not in the political box. Freedom is in the KINGDOM inside of all of us that is a part of the ROYAL KINGDOM. Isaiah 1:1-31

I agree with J Walker. Like Sharpton or not he does speak for some. I think people forget that people who have the balls to stand up for themselves and do what they need to do are independent and don't necessarily need someone to step up for them. But those that aren't do! and if that's Al Sharpton's purpose then so be it! And if the rest of us don't start demanding better, we made need a Sharpton for ourselves.

Why can't we all get along black people. (Rodney King) quote. We as black folk can agree to disagree. What I heard from that coversation is anger from Brother AL and Tavis. There relationship probably will never be the same. The picture is resolving problems that are going to benefit all people whether they are black, White, Brown or Yellow. There should not be just a black agenda. Let't just stop fighting with each other, agree disagree, but still get issue resolved and still love one another.

What's wrong with everybody, just because Al is in the White House doesn't mean he's creating policy. He is just giving Obama advice on what hair perm would be best for Michelle and the kids. Al wants congress to vote for either Dark & Lovely or Dudley's!!
