There has been much reported on the disagreement between Tavis Smiley and The Rev. Al Sharpton about whether the White House should adopt a "black agenda," and focus on issues that specifically address the Black community.
President Obama has turned to Sharpton in recent weeks to answer increasingly public criticism in the Black community over his economic policies and subtle approach to addressing race. Sharpton has been to the White House five times since Obama took office, most recently this month as part of a small group meeting with economics advisor Lawrence Summers.
There are signs that Sharpton will play a role in mobilizing the black community in this fall's midterm elections. According to the Wall Street Journal, Democratic National Committee Chairman, Timothy Kaine, conferred with Sharpton about going to black churches and neighborhoods to mobilize voters.
There has been criticism of Sharpton's "relationship," with the White House, most predictably by conservatives, but also by some Black leaders who resent Sharpton being annointed as representation for the whole of the black community by some. White House officials demur, saying that Sharpton is one of "many leaders we continue to speak with on the issues of the day."
Professor Cornel West said in an interview that Sharpton risked becoming a "symbolic insider," whose views would be trumped by White House support for economic policies geared toward boosting Wall Street and away from Sharpton's grassroots constituency.
But Sharpton has been broadening his horizons, so to speak, most clearly symbolized by his work with uber-conservative Newt Gingrich. He and Gingrich toured schools in several cities last year with Secretary of Education Arne Duncan to promote programs to close the racial achievement gap.
Why should White House conversations with anyone about issues affecting the Black community be an issue?

Like it or not, Rev. Sharpton is a voice for Black America. He speaks a truth that a lot of people don't want to hear. I use to be one of those people, but I have come to the realization that Rev. Sharpton is speaking up to my best interest. I don't think Karl Rove, John Boehner or Eric Kantor would do that.

You silly haters need to stop!
Mr. Sharpton has as much right to speak on Black issues as anyone else!
He does not speak for, nor is he "the" Black leader for black folk. If he does not do it for you, then so be it! Simply move on and STOP trying to pull others down.
Our President, the leader of this country is not a fool, and he is light years from being stupid. I think his including Mr. Sharpton (who does speak for many Black folks) is a wise move. It does not mean that Mr. Sharpton is the ONLY Black person he will confer with. President Obama knows many, many Black people. He knew them before he ever became President.
Actually, I prefer Sharpton to that giggling, goofy, talks black but sleeps white, over ~rated, Cornel West.
Mr. Smiley (although I have respect for what he has done) is beginning to look like a jealous man, fuled by an over the top ego.
Why can't Black people embrace and respect each other with dignity. We may not all agree, however does that mean we have to disrespect each other for all the world to see?
BALCK FOLK, WAKE UP!

When are we going to wake up and learn if we do not work togeather and support each other and stop putting our own people down when one of us steps up to do something positive. The white race or any other race who view our people as inferior do not have to utter a word, they just sit back and know that the tactics that were use to brain wash our people in slavery were pass down from generation to generation and has not skipped a generation yet.
It's time to break the cycle, start taching our young people now to work as A Power of One. We need leaders in every city, in every state strong God directed leaders, their is room enough for all. Instead of slamming him, help him send him letters with your suggestions to relate to president Obama let's work togeather It's time! Let the programing of tearing down, slamming each other end Let's become the Power of One and as a people to elevate each other and work togeather not out of rivalry or deceit but encouragement, comfort from love, participation in spirit. We can do it! Yes We Can!It's not going to be an easy road but we will,we can.
Participate don't hate

I know that the Al Sharpton that you all are speaking about can't be the Al Sharpton that I know. Al is not self serving. He has been out there a long time fighting unjust situations for a long long time. He stood up when it wasn't popular to stand up. He is well educated and a fighter for human justice. Stop hating and try to say some positive things..........PLEASE

Most of the people who post comments on Black Voices are White people (especially the negative, hate-filled crap that is posted here).

This morning on CNN at 10:00 am, Kyra asked Rev. Sharpton why should there be an African American agenda for President Obama. I could not believe she asked that question. She went on to state that if there is no "female agenda", "hispanic agenda", "gay agenda", etc. No one, that she asked about had ancestors that had been slaves in this country. Ancestors that have been beaten, hung, whipped, raped, murdered at a whim, sold and ripped from their families, chained and shackled, in this Country! You would think that this would have answered her question and the thought to ask such a question would never have entered her mind! What do you think? I think she should apologize for asking such a question. All the other Presidents tacked an African American agenda since Dr. King put it there. Why shouldn't President Obama tackle it?
