Renee Bowman, 44, was devoid of any emotion, stoically standing before a Montgomery County Circuit judge yesterday, as she apologized for abusing, killing, then freezing her two adoptive daughters. The judge was unmoved.
The Maryland woman received a life sentence for torturing her two special needs daughters Minnet and Jasmine Bowman, both under age 10, whose lifeless bodies were discovered in a locked freezer in September 2008.
According to investigators, Bowman had killed the girls months before they were discovered by police. They concluded that the woman traveled with the freezer as they moved from place to place within the state. Even after the children's deaths, Bowman continued to collect subsidies, totaling $150,000 since the adoptions.
Last month, Bowman was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder and three counts of first-degree child abuse. There was also another guilty plea of one count of first-degree child abuse for a third adoptive 9-year-old daughter, whom police found wandering the streets. The child, who now lives with foster parents, testified during the trial about the horrors that she and the other girls endured while under Bowman's care, such as being beaten with baseball bats and choked with shoe strings until they would pass out. Bowman was sentenced to 25 years for these crimes.
At yesterday's trial, Bowman received two consecutive life terms for the murders and given 75 years for the abuse, which was the maximum under Maryland law.
Alan Drew, who is a public defender, stated the defense would appeal the murder convictions.
