Countless women could only dream of hitting a jackpot that would send their cheating husband's mistresses to the poor house. One lucky woman did strike it rich, because of the "severe emotional distress" she suffered, as the result of her two-timing husband's neglect. Last week, a Greensboro, N.C., court ordered a mistress to fork over a total of $9 million dollars, $5 million in compensatory damages and $4 million in punitive damages, to her lover's humiliated spouse.
Cynthia Shackelford, 60, sued her husband's mistress Anne Lundquist, 49, back in 2007, because the jilted wife claims the "other woman" destroyed her 33-year marriage to Allan, her husband.
Lundquist was charged with "alienation of affections," or interfering in a marriage. The ruling was made in one of the few U.S. states that allows such a charge to be brought up against a home wrecker.
Since all involved parties live in North Carolina, the state remains as one of 7 (the others are Hawaii, Illinois, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Carolina, South Dakota and Utah) that allows a person to sue the party that is alleged to have interfered in a marriage, which is the "alienation of affections" law. More than 200 such cases are filed statewide in an average year, according to the legal publication the ABA Journal.
According to court documents, Cynthia said her husband began an affair with Lundquist before she separated from him in April 2005. The spurned wife says that she and her husband were still in love when Lundquist severed their union. "I had not a clue that Allan would wander," Shackelford told a local newspaper. "He kept telling me, 'Oh, she's just a friend. There's no affair. I love you.'"
Cynthia stated that she gave up teaching to support her husband's career and raise the couple's two children. When the couple parted, she says they had to move in with friends in order to keep from being homeless. Allan was mandated by the courts to pay spousal support, but allegedly never did. The roving spouse faces arrest on a contempt-of-court charge for violating that support order.
Although Cynthia might not get the exact amount awarded to her, she is satisfied that the case has received tons of exposure and that it serves as a kind of warning for those folks who prey on married people: "We would like for people to respect the sanctity of marriage," Cynthia said. "We wanted a number high enough that it would keep other people from ... going after other married spouses."

The mistress knew about the wife. This was a long-term affair and it's unreasonable she didn't know after a long period of time. The husband is paying, since there's a contempt of court charge against him. The mistress is liable because, she too, committed adultery. Regardless of whether or not the man was 'happy' he has no right to break the vows just because he wants 'new action'. There is NO woman who is EVERYWOMAN to a man and vice versa. This statute applies to the injured husband, as well. He could very well go after his wife's lover if he so chose. I applaud this wife. It doesn't matter that she enjoyed the fruits of her husbands labor and he became unhappy. Marriage is for life and if you want to tip, leave. He didn't want to pay for a divorce and support and tried to play both against the middle. As far as his other affairs, maybe she chose to sue the woman worth the most; or maybe future litigation is pending against the other women he slept with. Men will get enough of humping anything moving just because they can. I am in total agreement with this.

How does she know the mistress preyed on her husband?? The husband probably lied to the woman and told her he wanted to be with her and loved her!!!

Remember folks this law is only in a few states..so if this happens in Maine, Penn, Maryland, Nevada and so on..Many marriages will still fall apart and the mistresses in those states will not be held accountable..the husband ..YES..Mistresses...NO. So this law should be in all states and the single women will stay far away and men will uphold their vows of matrimonial..
As for me ..Yes this law shou

God Bless Her ! Any woman that thinks that she can get involved with a married man is destroying many people. I had a long 28 marriage and it was done to me. This woman is to be commended for doing this for the WORLD and for all of the loose women out there that think nothing of Destroying marriages. If they know that the man is married or even separated but working on the marriage should definitely take the consequences for her actions. After all Adultery is illegal and marriage is a contract. Val Claycomb worked at Republic Bank and she got involved with my husband. I called the bank because that is where they met and yet Republic Bank said she did nothing inappropriate and that it was no a conflict of interests. Wrong ! She took advantage of the fact that he came into that bank and depositing large sums of money. I'd like to sue Republic Bank ! Cjaburg@gmail.com

I think that it is your right also. I really don't think that it is just about the other woman. If it is the other man then he is equally culpable and you should have a right to sue if he knew that you were married. Sorry to ya...it happened to me and it is a travesty.
