Mixed Reaction to U.S. Offshore Drilling
President Barack Obama's decision to permit oil drilling and gas exploration, which is intended to create jobs and limit America's dependence on foreign oil, along the East Coast has triggered a mixed reaction: Environmentalists say they are horrified by such a measure. For them, damage to the environment will dwarf any benefits of the drilling. Others who live in the affected areas cringe at the idea of seeing oil rigs dominate their water views. However, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, a supporter of Obama's plan, expects "thousands of new jobs, hundreds of millions in new state revenue and tens of billions of dollars in economic impact for the commonwealth." It will take at least five years for the drilling to begin. [Yahoo News]
