O.J. Simpson's Suit Finds a Home
While the Smithsonian Institution rejected the suit O.J. Simpson wore the day he was acquitted of murder, the Newseum, a museum of news in Washington, D.C., will display the tan Armani suit, shirt and tie, which has been kept by Simpson's ex-manager, Mike Gilbert, since 1995. The suit was actually embroiled in a legal battle between Gilbert and Fred Goldman, father of Ronald Goldman, because Goldman felt it was his right to have the suit. Goldman, though, believed the suit should be donated to a museum, and he finally got his wish. For the Newseum, the Simpson case was the "trial of the century. It's a piece of news history that we will include in our collection of objects relating to the trial," said the museum curator. [NPR]
No Sign of Survivors Yet in Mine Blast
After Monday's blast at a coal mine in West Virginia, Gov. Joe Manchin said rescuers have been trying to send out signals to possible survivors around the mine but have had no response. The blast killed 25 people, but four miners haven't been accounted for yet. Rescuers hoped that any survivors would have found the airtight chambers that house food, water and oxygen, but of the four chambers, rescuers have only gotten to one, which was empty. If alive, miners are stuck 1,000 feet below the Earth's surface. If the four miners are found dead, this blast would mark the highest U.S. casualty rate for a mine explosion, topping the explosion that killed 27 people in 1984 in Utah. [Yahoo News]
Government Pulls Out All the Stops in Attempting to Reach Minorities With Census
In 2000, the government was criticized for not making more of a concerted effort to reach minorities and for using a cookie-cutter approach in advertisements. This time around, the government is spending $140 million and has created ads in 28 different languages to connect with African, Asian and Hispanic populations that have historically been difficult to reach.
