On April 3rd, Nia Haqq and Michael Muchioki were returning from their engagement party. That night, they were robbed and murdered, with each of them being shot twice in the head. Samuel Jefferson, the Police director of Jersey City, N.J., told Essence.com:
"We found them. Right now we have four arrests. We have the weapon and we have the evidence. And we possibly have someone admitting to the crime, that they were there. Right now, we have one man and two females.
"This was a random act of crime and opportunity. Unfortunately, the devil was on their side for that brief moment. Hopefully now the families can rest and the residents of Jersey City will know these people are off the streets, and we recovered the weapon. This department that I am the head of, the Police Chief, the men and women in blue, they felt their heart rip on this case. It was more than just a job. We feel very good that we were able to solve this right now."The suspects took Haqq's engagement ring, and Muchioki's wallet. They also took their cell phones and gift cards from the engagement party.
Obviously, this story is one of the most painful we've seen all year, since it is difficult to hear that such a terrible thing happened to a young couple right as they were beginning their life together. What is also problematic about this tragedy is that there seems to be a long list of disturbing crimes coming out of the state of New Jersey. This month, a 7-year old girl was allegedly gang raped in a New Jersey housing project. Just a month earlier, a man threw his 2-year-old child off a bridge, right at the time that the child's mother was filing for an order of protection.
Most of us are at a loss for words when hearing about what happened to this couple. At the very least, if there is a statistically proven pattern of excessive violence in the state of New Jersey, then the police should be given the resources to fight crime more effectively. Additionally, these experiences teach us to cherish the precious life we have on this earth and the time we have with our loved ones. Go speak to someone in your family and tell them you love them right now.

Lord, this is the saddest thing I've read in a some
time. All I keep doing is praying, why would someone do this to anyone. Yes times are hard but it doesn't warrant for anyone to kill someone to get what they have. I am sure if they would've asked Mike and Nia for these items for their life they would've given it. They are beyond monsters and I try lord knows to forgive others but this one is a hard one to swallow and I don't even know Mike or Nia but from reading their story and watching their video and pictures, I did not know them-they were truly Black Love. RIP Nia and Mike

There is no punishment good enough for the evil beasts behind this. I'm glad they're off the streets, and hope they're physically and mentally tortured for the rest of their lives.

I agree.. we can't blame other races for everything.. it's sad because all the other races sit back and watch all the AA's kill each other off for jewelry, a ride, rims, money, watches, clothes on your back and for what? it won't last long.. it's temporary.. it's sad that some AA's don't have respect for anyone, not even themselves.. May GOD be with them all..

It hurts me to say this but people such as these murderers should've been flushed at birth for they lack some of the fundamental things that make you human beings, such as compassion, remorse and most of all the feeling of caring for the life of others. They can do despicable things like killing and sleep like a baby tell that they are lower than the animals who must kill in order to live

Oh my God. I couldn't stop the tears from flowing when i viewed this video. This was so senseless. I'm in disbelief. How could they? They need to be given the death penalty and I don't usually agree with the death penalty. My Jesus.

Duane, YOU said a mouth full. We have got to start at home!
Death penalty if they are convicted. We have got to start at home first. More police aren't the only answer. The goal should be less police. Dr. Boyce, we need to get to the cancer and stop bandaiding things and blaming WHITE folk and the system with what we have in our power to change. Crimes like these are proof positive that CANCER SPREADS.
