"I'm the first here to admit that I've made mistakes, and it's been incumbent on me to take responsibility to shoulder that burden, make the necessary changes and move on," said Steele.
"The one mistake we cannot make this November is to lose."
The speech was given to the Southern Republican Leadership Conference, and it was Steele's first public appearance since it was disclosed that he has been spending RNC funds in a questionable fashion. The most famous expenditure was a $2,000 tab at a California Night Club that featured simulated lesbian sex and other "interesting" activities.
"We can't coast into the majority, nor can we assume it's a sure thing. The liberal media are looking for any possible alternative narrative to tell," Steele said. "They are looking for those distractions, and Lord knows I've provided a few." He added: "The Democrats also know that they have some explaining to do, and they'd love nothing more than for us to keep pointing fingers."
I will see Michael Steele this week at the National Leadership Summit in New York City this weekend. The event is being hosted by Rev. Al Sharpton and will include people from the left (like me), as well as people from the right (like Michael Steele and Bill O'reilly). The nature of the gathering reflects the fact that Steele may have a genuine interest in expanding the Republican party to include minority groups. It also shows that both Steele and Sharpton have a lot in common and are willing to reach across the isle. I respect that.

Republicans ought to be gearing up for Nov. and not fighting among each other. That's what the opposite would love to see.
Unity in the GOP, regardless of the nitpicing.

I don't believe that Michael Steele's presence at the National Leadership Summit means anything to the majority of African-Americans. Why is he going to be there?. It is supposed to be a leadership summit. He lost all credibility as a leader when he apologized to Rush Limbaugh. To add insult to injury as the so called head of the Republican National Convention (the political party of Abraham Lincoln)he should have denounced the decision that the Governor of Virginia made to honor Confederates for their involvement in the Civil War. If Michael Steele won't denounce the "honoring " of the Confederacy, then I believe that he supports the decision to honor this country's terrorists.

Deborah,
Michael Steele's presence at the National Leadership Summit means nothing to me. Well, perhaps it does mean something. Maybe it means that he is mingling with the folks that his Republican base don't like, possibly to gain a little strength and support from his roots before he abandons us again.
It seems to me that any brother that is with the Republican Party couldn't possibly be trying to recruit minorities. Does the Klan recruit minorities? What would he be trying to recruit us for? Not me!
Simply put, trying to get along in a Klan like group requires playing the one. Could he possibly have any energy left to really empathize with black problems. I believe he is thinking of himself only. Maybe he believes this is a way the Klan can use him somemore. Pathetic.
You know he probably never had credibility with black folks. Unfortunately, the country is clearly black and white again. Or you can call it clearly Democratic and Republican again. - and we got a black President.
Never thought I'd see a President who looks like me.
Never Never thought that if the President looked like me that we would be divided even more. It ain't his fault.
Somebody need to put love songs back on the radio like the 60s or somethin'. - You know like peace and stuff like that. I can't believe I called myself an independent three years ago. -Straight up Democrat = no brainer.
I must have been tryin' too hard to be educated. Bad William Watkins.
