According to a court ruling yesterday, it looks like rapper Nas will have to fork over quite a large chunk of change to his soon-to-be ex-wife Kelis Rogers-Jones. To be more specific, try more than $700,000 .
An L.A. County Superior Court judge ordered Nas to "immediately" pay Kelis $47,249.42 in back child support and $40,454 in back spousal support.
Nas also has to dig deep in his pockets for an additional $10,000/month in spousal support until he pays off the $299,015.50 he owes his former Milkshake Ma.
No, but wait, digging deep in his pockets isn't enough, the hip-hop performer has to also break in to his piggy bank to pay 90 percent of Kelis' legal fees, which total $155,787.28, PLUS $48,549.83 to cover his former mate's accounting expenses.
Life, for the hip-hop power couple ain't been no crystal stair. They decided to divorce last April, after being married for five years. When the controversial couple's son, Knight, was born last July, Nas was unfortunately not allowed to witness the birth, but he had to pay for the baby nurse, prenatal expenses and medical insurance. Reportedly, Nas was heartbroken.
Kelis cited "irreconcilable differences" in the filed divorce papers as the reason for the split. Rumors have been swirling around for a while, involving infidelity and sex tapes, but the battling duo have not commented publicly about the speculations.

OK...what does she have to pay? This sounds really fair. Anybody with money should only marry those who have the same or sign a prenup.

Not only all that he has to pay, his own legal fees also.
NAS had stupid lawyer(s) who could care less about a fair settlement on the behalf on NAs.
There is nothing listed about property?
Who as a celebrity goes into a marriage with someone who came from NOTHING most likely(no money) probably the one step up from the project herself..and walks away with millions she didn't earn?
And seeing the courts are in california, where the divorce clause are split down the middle(50/50) even if one of the party has NOTHING. So knowing this..why be a resident of cali without a prenup if you have millions?
Ask Whoopi Goldberg.. and Shari from "the view"..both of them as a court order had or have to pay spousal support to their divorce husbands..because they made the most money in the marriage, doing the marriage and at the time of the divorce decree issued.
NAS should have atleast petitoned for sole custody of his SON, he makes more money than Kelis. Now he has to pay child support when he can provide much better than Kelis - so Nas blow it there also.
Nas wasn't BRIGHT at all.. chosing the lawyers who represented him.. who didn't give a dayum other than the 33.3 percentage- received as Nas lawyers.
Non- african american males who make more money than their soon- to- be- ex-wives GET their children as in full custody...and it has been known and ordered by the courts..the ex-wife has to pay child support to the ex-husband who has full custody of their child together.

Your concern is only about the money. You didn't mention anything about the most important aspects in caring for a child. Child support is not the determinant in deciding who gets custody of the child. Any custodial parent needs to be able to provide for ALL the needs of the child. Many people don't ask for full custody because they know they don't want it. There is nothing in here about the custody arrangement of the child. There are two types of custody, legal and physical. Legal custody determines who has the right to make decisions for the child (education, medical, etc) and physical custody determines who the child will reside with.
No one should ask for custody of a child just because they don't want to pay child support. If they are not willing to put time and energy into rearing that child then they should just step off...and send that check! LOL

@lyn..
..you are preaching to the choir..
..and I don't need a lecture about the legality of child custody..each state have different laws in that regard.. like for instance..in backward Georgia(haven't changed their laws since slavery) if a man and woman married and she get pregnant, and if known proven paturnity is not the husband ..Georgia law states he has to support that child until 18 years old- simply because he is still married to his pregnant wife who child is by another man, and furthermore, knowing who the real daddy is MAKES NO DIFFERENCE in other words the wife can't go after the real daddy for support after the divorce from her husband even if paturnity is poven..THAT AIN'T RIGHT! The maried husband is still held liable to pay for child that is NOT his THAT AIN'T RIGHT
Anyway..
..the article didn't go indept about the child custody either..
..and I'm NOT sorry Lyn..MEN think differently than women especially when it comes to divorce and child support and spousal support...
..most men I know want LEGAL custody of their children especially if they can provide BETTER for their children moreso than the mother and that was MY point essentially and the laws are changing as we speak in favor of such a stance- the FATHER has every right to have legal custody of the children moreso than the mother if he can provide BETTER for the children than the mother can..then why sent a check-..he's taking care of them anyway with the check being sent..in fact.. if most divorced men are smart.. the ideal is -less cash in the hands of the mother..and send checks to day-care, doctor's care..any other services that his child may need .. and yes even to the landlord of the home were the child resides..take your child to the store and he himshelf buy the clothes..less hard cash given to the mother is the ideal and the courts can order the pay-outs in SAID ORDER as such if the father ask for it.. (most father aren't aware of options on their behalf to child support)..especially Black men..and again that was my point..
..Granted NAS may not have wanted legal custody.. or even otherwise partial custody..
However, that wasn't the initial point other than using NAS as an example and what RIGHTS the father has a main stream provider (making more money than his ex-wife).. applying for and receiving legal custody of his children..as most other men outside of the african american community are DOING nowadays..
I think I have MADE myshelf quite CLEAR..as to my position and point of view. Protecting the RIGHTS of fatherhood after a divorce.
.. you best believe if I ever get married and God forbide..I have to divorce I getting LEGAL and TOTAL custody of my children...just like my father did with me from my mother.. because he COULD provide better for me..my mother and I are tite nd I love her ..and I spent just as much time with her as my FATHER, but I lived with my father..and now that I look back..my father knew it was the BEST situation for me, first to be with the MAN as his son ..I have a mother who is RN-Nurse and a step- mother who is lawyer..I have two moms and my father is a retired chief Detective.
So it can happen.. MEN just need to know their RIGHTS as a father who want legal custody of their children- proven as the main provider.

Well this divorce is really hitting Nas in the pockets. Why would the judge order him to pay such a large amount of money is beyond me. Kelis is a grown woman in the music industry also. Why can't see get out there and make a ablum to get money? Pathetic. Nas is an idiot for getting married with no prenup anyway. He really is a sucker for love. Kelis is just a greedy person. If she wants to live the rich life style than her is a hint. Earn it!! Nas worked hard to reach the status he is at. It's sad to see him have to give away so much that came from his hard work to somebody dat didn't contribute anything.

They say the reason divorce is so expensive is because it's worth it.

Yes, we marry for LOVE....however, equal status is important. I'm sure he know what kind of chick she was before the marriage. And Kelis know what kind of dude he was. So, let's pay up and more the hell on with their lives. Also, she will be in his lives forever due to the children. God Bless the child who has his own.....

Nas, don't pay anything. You should tell the judge to put you in jail and let Kellis find a job. Well, don't pay nothing over 25% of your monthly pay. Also, quit your job or have your company drop you from its label-using your not paying CS as an immediate excuse, and other record companies will fall in line to help you avoid this injustice. This is Ameerica and male hatred runs deep in our laws when women are involved.
