Survey Shows Religion, Unemployment and Crime to Be Top Worries for Africans
The Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life conducted a survey in Africa and found that while people are very concerned about future religious conflict, they are even more worried about unemployment, corruption and crime. Of the African nations, though, Nigeria and Rwanda were most concerned about future religious bloodshed. [AP]
China's Death Toll Rises After Quake
Rescue teams fought gusty winds and freezing temperatures as they tried to locate survivors and pile up the dead. So far, more than 600 bodies have been retrieved since the earthquake hit the western region of China yesterday. Many are said to be walking the streets bloodied from their wounds, while 66 children and 10 teachers were killed in three schools that collapsed during the quake. Three-hundred people are said to be still missing, and 100,000 people need to be relocated. [Yahoo News]
Dead Man Wins Tenn. Mayoral Race
In Tracy City, Tenn., a mayoral race brought about unexpected results. Candidate Carl Robin Geary won the nonpartisan race. The problem? He died unexpectedly a few weeks ago. Barbara Brock, the incumbent mayor, lost to a dead man, even though Geary's death was widely publicized. The kicker? Brock only took over because the previous mayor had also died. [CBS News]
