I recently received an interesting e-mail from a friend of mine. The e-mail was linked to a video about the singer T-Pain and reminded her of a conversation the two of us had a day earlier. The gist of our discussion was that there are far too many of "us" who enjoy being ignorant and uninformed. While this certainly doesn't define the bulk of the African American community, there are some of us who are proud of the fact that we don't read, don't understand things and don't want to educate ourselves. Even actor Will Smith recalls hiding his books on the way home from school, because he didn't want his friends to know that he studied.
T-Pain seems to be determined to take ignorance to a new level. Known as the artist who once showed up to an awards show wearing a necklace with the words "Big Ass Chain" on it, Pain was made to look really silly by Fox News conservative Sean Hannity, who tricked the artist into endorsing the Republican Party.
I don't blame Hannity for pulling his rope a dope on T-Pain, since the artist is an easy target. As I've mentioned before in articles about black males and education, any man who refuses to educate himself is begging to be another man's sucker. When caught in his embarrassing moment, T-Pain only made matters worse by issuing a statement in which he bragged about not being registered to vote and not being concerned at all about what happens in American politics. So, with his statement, T-Pain jumped out of the frying pan of ignorance and into the fire of flat-out coon-ography.
Look, here's the moral of the story:
1) It is not cool for a black man to be stupid. In fact, being stupid can get you killed or incarcerated, depending on what situations you are confronted with. A black man's greatest weapon in this world is knowledge, so if you choose to remain uneducated, you are going to battle in the nude with no weapons.
2) We must all be politically informed. Sorry, T-Pain, but politics does impact the lives of black people in an incredibly significant way. Issues like mass incarceration, excessive unemployment and a terrible inner-city educational system (all of which may have led to T-Pain's lack of informative conditioning) play a huge role in the status of our communities. Guess what? The conservatives are the ones who work night and day to keep us ignorant, which is the reason Hannity was laughing at T-Pain under his breath.
3) If you don't know what you're talking about, then maybe it's best to shut up. We pay T-Pain to make bad music, not to endorse political candidates. Brother, you need to stay in your lane. Wait, I retract the use of the word "brother." Any man who enjoys the idea of being ignorant absolutely cannot be any kind of brother of mine.
I won't say anything else, and will simply allow T-Pain to speak for himself. You can watch the video below:

Anthony Hopkins was a God-fearing Christian. As he traveled throughout the rural South, preaching the word of the Lord, he would always have his Bible in tow. Folks who would gather to hear him preach stood in awe. Many even referred to him as a "prophet." This preacher did more than spread the Holy word, though. Little did Hopkins' followers know that he was a possible murderer, rapist and child molester.

People like the so called T-Pain,who might be better called P-Brain,and people like the buffoon that wrote this response, are more detrimental to how African Americans are perceived than any of those clowns on Fox so called "news". They sound about as intelligent as the "no snitchin" morons. They should remember that it's better to keep silent and have people think you might be an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove it.

Quotes from the video:
"Being arrogrant about your ignornance. And if you don't pay attention then you don't know."
"And the people who think that they are too smart for the game don't realize when they are being gamed."
The definition of basic ignorance and it can't be explained any clearer than that.
Last year, I watched rapper Mos Def who was on a popular political talk show along with two veteran political experts talking about some aspects of foreign policy and he sounded like a total idiot & buffoon mouthing off his "ghetto conspiracy theories" about the subject with no insight and no credible facts and the two experts, along with the host of the show, just kept explaining terms to him and correcting him everytime he said something.
And he would not shut up!!
It was very hard for me to watch him countinue to fumble and when you venture outside the people and environment that listens to you and you engage strangers not of your ilk, be prepared: either know the facts of what you are talking about, sit back & listen if you don't know (and/or ask questions) or just keep your mouth shut.
Hannity played T-Pain and he should have just said "no comment" exit and just walk away.

t-pain is very ignorant man because he doesn't know his facts correctly bout politics and government. the reason that he's probably doing this because he wants attention and doesn't give a damn bout african-americans. he should read more than making up lyrics which downgrades our sisters as well our people. t-pain needs a wake up call about life and government. tea baggers(GOP) are going against their economic interests plus they are bigots.

Whether Mos Def is ignorant or not, must be left to speculation. I state this because of the results of his actions. First, many people ( Black and White ) observed and listened to the conversation. The supposed perplexity radiating from Mos Def caused a chain of very important events namely; in the usual dialogue, it's assumed that participants are familiar with the subject matter and they merely talk on, leaving many listeners bewildered and understanding less than they did prior to the dialogue. This is because they don't explain the jargon, leaving the uninitiated blank. However, Mos Def's antics FORCED the panel to EXPLAIN and ILLUMINATE the subject matter in a BASIC, and UNDERSTANDABLE MANNER, enabling those who might have missed the gist of the conversation to actually understand it. In light of that, the possibility exists' that his antics may have been a deliberate stroke of some unknown form of genius. Ok, I know I'll catch plenty of flack on that one, however, give me credit for trying. lol.

Let me say, thank you, first of all! I also want to say that I am a redneck (in the GOOD sense) through and through and I am proud to say that my entire family voted for Obama---if only those repubs. could see it in their hearts to come together for our common good. I am sorry for the terrible struggles my black brothers and sisters have had to endure--monstrosities, is the more accurate word--for to live through that particular history --and SURVIVE-----leaves me humbled. It makes it all the more significant that we stood together and elected him as OUR president...!
