A toddler was shot to death in Chicago while sitting in a car with her two sisters. The gang member who fired the gun was aiming at the girl's father, who belonged to a rival gang.
The sad story captured headlines across the country but was far from the only violence on Chicago streets in recent days.
With seven people killed and 18 wounded in the past week in Chicago, two local lawmakers have asked Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn to send out the National Guard to reduce street violence.
The requests come from Chicago Democratic Reps. John Fritchey and LaShawn Ford. Fritchey said he doesn't want to see tanks rolling down city streets but noted that a heightened presence of guardsmen on 9 percent of the city's streets, where most street crime takes place, would help.
Understandably, Chicago Police Chief Jody Weis is less than enthusiastic about the possibility of guardsmen stepping on to his police officers' turf. He said national guard officers operate under different rules than law enforcement officers and they may not work well together.
Weis added that he has plans to create a 100-officer team made up of regular and volunteer police to respond to high-crime areas. He said National Guard officers could help fill out those ranks.
It seems to me that asking the National Guard to hit the streets might provide a short-term solution for Chicago, and the fact that city and state lawmakers are now focusing on street crime, which has been ignored for too long, is a good thing.
Only a far more strategic set of solutions, targeting drug dealing, street gangs and the availability of guns, is going to offer lasting reductions of crime in Chicago.
But at least the governor, mayor and police chief cannot ignore the problem any longer.
People may differ on the best solutions, but no one can dispute the need for action.
So far this year, 113 people have been killed across Chicago. That is the same number of Americans killed in Iraq and Afghanistan combined this year.

I have lived in the Chicagoland area all my life. I am raising four boys (two are seniors in H.S.)
I have moved from area to area, suburb to suburb to stay one step ahead of gang activity to help keep my boys out of gangs and alive.
I have been able to do it so far but it has been a full time job. I have been fortunate with GODS help to be able devote time to take them to afterschool activities and keep them busy on weekends. However as early as middle-school there are other issues that even the most diligent parent can't stop them from being confronted with...sex, drugs, alcohol etc. BUT that is not the topic today...THE TOPIC IS STAYING ALIVE...
I don't know if the national guard is the answer or the law that puts a gun offender in jail for a year is the answer...
I know that there IS NOT JUST ONE answer...
It is obvious Mayor Daley nor Police Chief Weis don't HAVE the answers either...
What I do know about is that raising boys and keeping them busy and teaching responsibility early in their lives helps keep them out of trouble.
My fear and that of other parents is that no matter what we do it doesn't keep trouble away from our children...
Even though my boys are law abiding citizens that doesn't stop them from becoming VICTUMS...
This problem with gangs and guns is ALL of our problem...
I believe that if this problem were in Wilmette or Frankfort the motivation to find some solutions would happen quickly.
I'd like to see police walking the streets all over Chicagoland and young children growing up knowing them by name...
I THINK YOUNG PEOPLE NEED JOBS...FREE AFTERSCHOOL AND SUMMER PROGRAMS...LONGTERM...NOT JUST AT THE ON SET OF SUMMER...
Every summer in recent years the news blames the season for the uprising of the lawless...they were their all the time building up rage and frustration all winter...
HOW LONG ARE WE GOING TO BLAME THE SEASON AND NOT ATTACK THE REASON...

Using the national guard is a slippery slope. It sets the president that it's alright to use the military to maintain order. I don't know about you, but martial law scares me far more than any criminal.
Guns will be there no matter what, I think the real problem is not guns, but who has the guns. Criminals prey on people because they know their targets are unarmed. There's little risk to them and plenty of reward.
Make it legal for normal law abiding citizens to carry guns in Chicago and the crime rate will go way down. That's my two cents.

It would be too risky to allow the National Guard to take control of our neighborhoods. We can not allow Chicago to become a Police State. Yet, there is an appropriate role for the National Guard. They should be deployed to monitor our Ports, Airports, Waterways, Railways and Highways to help stop the flow of illegal guns and drugs into the City of Chicago. Chicago Police officers, currently performing these functions, could be redeployed to the troubled neighborhoods.

I believe that if these idiots are going to keep murdering like they're doing then it is necessary to bring in the National Guard. Look at how are city is going to hell! What's helping? NOTHING! There's only so much Chicago Police can do. Putting National Guards in high crime areas of Chicago would be a tremendous amount of help & a great success! We need to take whatever steps possible to help our community & not only that, our city. The youth are not making it to adulthood. This seems like the last resort & I am going with this decision 100%! They don't know how to act so take these fools freedom & teach them something they'll never forget, how to be civil & respect one another including themselves.

Here is a thought... How about we get rid of the corrupted cops 1st. And 2ndly consider the south side a part of the city! Ive lived all over my entire life and the south side bar far gets the short end of the stick. The schools are failing buses are being cut monthly and none of the tax dollars are going back into that area. OK downtown looks pretty but how many times do we need to redo a park or add a cafe to a beach?! Tourism has been the main and only focus for so long... but tourist wont come if they fear being killed!
I love chicago but i had to move out. The fact that it IS the most segregated place i have ever been was really starting to bother me. I have friends and have dated many races and have also been publicly shamed by blacks and whites for my decisions THIS IS RIDICULOUS!!! I have moved out to New York City where yes there is crime and gangs but everyone lives together. You very rarely see that in chicago and that too is adding to the crime and gang violence.
