Afeni Shakur

The mother of late rapper Tupac Shakur, Afeni Shakur, 63, was arrested earlier this month by state alcohol agents for a felony possession of marijuana; maintaining a vehicle, dwelling or place for a controlled substance; and simple possession of a controlled substance. Bail was set at $10,000, and she is currently out on bond.

Afeni discussed her struggle with drug addiction as did her son in his lyrics in the song "Dear Mama." She has continued working as an activist since Tupac's death, and is a successful businesswoman and philanthropist.

Afeni Shakur
A former Black Panther, Afeni was arrested for withholding information that could have led to the arrest of leading members of "Panther 21." She was pregnant with Tupac while in prison.

Afeni founded the Georgia-based Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation, which provides art programs for young people, and Amaru Entertainment, the holding company for all Tupac's unreleased material. She has also since launched a fashion clothing line, Makaveli Branded, where all the proceeds go to Tupac's charity, the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation.

A felony charge for marijuana possession and $10,000 bail sounds excessive, particularly if one considers the same "crime" in California. While we can only speculate on whether she was using or selling, or just holding drugs for others, do you think she is being unfairly targeted by law enforcement or is it time for her to clear up whatever issues she may have with drugs?

Either way, enjoy this lovely tribute to Tupac and Afeni:
