The state of Arizona is in the middle of a
heated battle over the rights of immigrants, and the battle is about more than just immigration. In an even bolder move that has shocked the nation, the Arizona governor has
stated in adjustments to education policy that schools will lose state funding by teaching courses that promote solidarity among a given group of people. The policy bans courses that "are designed primarily for students of a particular ethnic group or advocate ethnic solidarity instead of the treatment of pupils as individuals." Many interpret this new law as a swipe at courses designed to teach cultural and ethnic lessons to minority students, especially Mexican Americans.
Additionally,
the Wall Street Journal recently pointed out that the policy further pushes school systems to get rid of teachers who have accents that are arbitrarily judged as being too thick. The law is clearly dangerous, because there are no specific criteria to determine when an accent is too thick to be in the front of a classroom.
Arizona's war against immigrants is one that it is not going to win. Despite the fact that there are polls stating that most Arizonans support recent legislation that broadens the search for illegal immigrants, the truth is that the new laws have only made the state look that much more racist to the rest of the country. Hispanic Americans represent at least 30 percent of the Arizona population, and their numbers are going to continue to grow.
Not to mention, many groups around the nation are engaging in an economic boycott of the state, which will further cripple the state's economy. At last count, Arizona had the largest budget deficit in the nation, when measured as a percentage of state tax revenues. Racism can be powerful, but it is almost never more powerful than money. Arizona will not be able to stick to its guns on this one.
What is most important about this outrage in Arizona (on both sides) is that it pushes the
Obama administration to embrace the sticky issue of comprehensive immigration reform. While the recent laws in Arizona are certainly worthy of being criticized (
I've done so myself on multiple occasions), some can logically define this abysmal law as a cry for help from a state that is growing tired of seeing the federal government drag its feet. There may be more to this law than racism.

What so many of you fail to understand is that the State of Arizona made it against the law to be illegal, Duh. As if it wasn't against the law before. Both Republicans and Democrats want to legalize these law violators so that can try and get their votes. That is the whole story. Power, power, power. Money, money, money.

Apart from this country having both guilty past and present, how can it truthfully take the moral high road against any wrong doing today?
Let me say this: Even If it were simply a matter of Latin soldiers spearheading mayhem across Arizona alone, then as Ooozzzz pointed out so brilliantly. It would never remain Arizona’s problem alone. The door they now knock on, will quickly lead to America being called into court on similar issues of injustice; the kind that has affected masses of people belonging to one ethnic origin. I.E. blacks who were violently denied inclusion not so long ago.
Let’s face it, those who can think beyond the patriotic rhetoric, know this would translate into examining the preoccupations of all criminal activity in this great land. [Of guilty beginnings] that’s affected many innocent people." Of course that would be going overboard as Susan stated! But this is what’s at stake!

This whole thing reminds me of watching not so realistic movies. Whereas you'll find Caucasians predominately entertaining us with wrong or mayhem! Throughout an entire movie they are rarely caught and brought to justice... It’s difficult to justify their warp portrayal of what it means to be morally alert! Especially as something to follow...The biggest challenge we've had to date is how 'not' to be infected by their philosophy on life. (A serpent’s venom)
I have to admit though, even though the movies are unrealistic, America's past and present is laced or "THICK" with injustices. Often this land is found guilty along the path of doing wrong while never being brought to trial. I.e. the holocaust of "BLACKS IN WESTERN HEMISPHERE"! For us their version of justice has become nothing less than them luring us to chase, 50c worth of inclusion among them and of course a pat on the back: "that sounds like this: "earn your keep you worthless ingrate."
I believe as a man who see's GOD as being just!
This will come to trial and be concluded by none other than him, because clearly these are the ones who bear the fruitage spoken of throughout the bible that would: "Draw sin along with cords of deceit, and wickedness as with cart ropes." or who call evil good and good evil...that put darkness for light and light for darkness.
In Psalms 94:20-23 it says specifically: "Can a corrupt throne be allied with you one that brings on misery by its decrees? 21. They band together against the righteous and condemn the innocent to death. 22. But the LORD has become my fortress and my GOD the rock in whom I take refuge. 23. He will repay them for their sins and destroy them for their wickedness; the LORD our GOD will destroy them."

this is such a touchy subject. There have been times when I was like, " Speak English or shut up!" I was wrong for that. me being a woman who chooses to be God's hands and feet, I can't purposely become hateful to people who aren't the same as me. I do believe that schools should find more productive and efficient ways to educate and fund schools. However, I cannot support this. I love my spanish friends and all people. There's no such things of bad people, just poor choices.

This has to be one of the dumbest things I have heard of recently. Who in the hell gets to decide what a strong accent is? If I am learning a foreign language I would prefer someone with an accent speaking the language I am trying to learn.
Having said that, this is just some more racist Bull$%^t against hispanics, but oh well let them get off their asses and protest to overturn it.
Dr. Boyce, why are you fighting so hard for the rights of Hispanics? They don't give a damn about African-Americans, so why should we spend our time and energy fighting for them? Does the current situation in Arizona mimic what African-Americans have gone through in America? Hell no!! Just 50 years ago we were still being lynched, children in churches were being firebombed. We have been attacked by dogs and have fire hoses turned on us. Hispanics haven't been through s@@t in this country. How many Hispanics have mourned the loss of Emmitt Till or said thank you to Rosa Parks?
As an African-American living in Arizona I can see the effects of illegal immigration everyday. The hospitals, jails, schools and social services are packed with people who are illegal and have no right to be here. If you don't speak Spanish, it's hard for the teenagers to even get a job at McDonald's!! President Obama needs to force the INS get off their asses and enforce the laws we have on the books. This country simply cannot afford to have millions of people pouring into the country looking for free services that their own countries are unwilling or unable to provide.
Speaking from an economic standpoint, we do exploit immigrant labor. If you want to make a change start at the top. If you arrest 100 illegals at a job site, don't just arrest them, arrest the owner as well. Send them to jail for two years and see how many companies are willing to hire undocumented workers after that. Until you take away the economic incentive people will still come to the U.S. looking for jobs and assistance from the government.

I live in Tucson, Arizona 50 miles from the border. IM 35 & IM Mexican, my bloodline has always been rite here, I have family on both sides of the line. So many of the people that live here are not native of this land many are retired & because things have grown all over the country as well there has been a need for growth in labor & a third world country like Mexico has relied on our countries good fortunes. If you have ever traveled Mexico well & not just as a tourist you'll find the people are dependent on North America although that does not make it rite. There has been a cause & affect scenario the cause our beloved country has dominated the hemisphere the pro we haven't had to go without, the affect is a country like Mexico that relies on us because it has been bleed & breed to do so has grown into it. It is no wonder why any Mexican national would want to better them self here in the states. Now that money has become an issue we are now counting every cent & pointing fingers at who`s fault it is. That's a good question isn't? Sure let's change the rules, the game has started, those rules that will define us as a people yet those rules are what this country was founded on "land of the free" a new America, where our doors are open & a place of opportunity. We have created an environment of conveniences, where we pay someone else do to our dirty work who will do it. This environment has given way to every desire some good some bad, with the bad comes supply & demand. Drugs where do they come from & of those places & routes. The poverty of Mexico has driven so many good people to do things that they wouldn't do else wise, that is one of commodity & the direct route to the states. This has now risen in crime & violence that has flooded into our very homes of America. There is places in Mexico that pushes the envelop in murder in comparison to those of warring nation death tolls. If I had to make a hard choice of life or of death either bye violence the lack of adequate health services & quality of life as well as food, my choice would be easy to make for me & my children "THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" with all their good stuff like clean water, education, health care, food & ofcourse central cooling. There is still much to be said on this issue at hand IM all for real immigration reform. Looks like the Honeymoon is over with us & them illegals.

I have a "thick" Irish accent and am legal to work (teach) in the US. Does that mean that I am not legally allowed to work in in the State of Arizona? I am so glad that I returned to Europe. The US is looking more and more like 1936 Germany with each day.
