Raymond Towler Incarcerated for 30 Years, Exonerated By DNA

Life isn't fair. And it never will be.

But thank God for the discovery of DNA evidence in crime cases, which is making time spent on earth a little bit more equitable for people like Raymond Towler, 52, who is free today after serving 30 years in prison for a rape he did not commit.

We all know that no amount of cash nor apologies from Ohio officials can ever pay back Towler for the injustice he suffered.

Aside from his "lost" 30 years, Towler was wrongly convicted of raping an 11-year-old girl, so he was likely the victim of an especially brutal brand of prison justice handed out by fellow inmates for such crimes involving children.

But one would hope that at the age of 52, Towler can enjoy a few good years on the outside.

He took his first step in that direction yesterday, when leaving a courthouse in Cleveland after Judge Eileen A. Gallagher discussed recently discovered DNA evidence that absolved Towler of the rape and threw out his conviction of life in prison.

The judge even left the bench and approached the defense table to shake Towler's hand and offer a traditional Irish blessing. That must have been quite a scene.

As in most of these cases, the true heroes of the story are the good people of the Innocence Project, a nonprofit organization that uses DNA evidence to clear people convicted of crimes.

In the courtroom was another Innocence Project graduate, Clarence Elkins, who served seven years in prison for two rapes and a murder he did not commit. The Akron man won a $1.75 million settlement from the state for his wrongful conviction.

No one can predict what Towler will receive from the state, but I hope a nice chunk of it is donated to the Innocence Project for its work. Few organizations are more worthy of support.
