Afeni Shakur, Tupac's Mom, Gets a Break, Court Hearing Postponed

Afeni Shakur Davis, mom of slain rap megastar Tupac, got a slight breather yesterday, when her court date for drug charges was postponed until late August.

Shakur Davis, a former Black Panther, was arrested in North Carolina last April for felony possession of marijuana; simple possession of a controlled substance; and maintaining a vehicle, dwelling or place for a controlled substance.

The 63-year-old philanthropist is certainly no stranger to illegal drugs. As a matter of fact, her legendary son wrote a 1995 hit song, 'Dear Mama,' that talked about her battle with narcotics. Shakur Davis's problems with drugs--from cocaine to crack--still appear to be an uphill struggle, although she claimed to have kicked the habit in the early 1990s.

Since Tupac's murder in 1996, Shakur Davis started a record and a film company, Amaru Entertainment Inc., that oversees Tupac's music portfolio. As founder of the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation, Shakur Davis has tried to keep her son's affinity for the arts alive by providing programs for young people.

Shakur Davis is free on bond.
