Some are arguing that President Barack Obama is losing his political capital, as the country rejected many of his Democratic colleagues in this week's political races. Sen. Arlen Specter is the fourth Democrat in the last few months to lose a high-profile race, despite being heavily endorsed by President Obama. This outcome concerns many Democrats as the party prepares for November elections.
Specter's primary loss to fellow Democrat Joe Sestak is leading some to question Obama's persuasiveness even within his own party. Obama's inability to help his fellow Democrats get elected may undermine his legislative agenda, as other party members may decide to distance themselves from the president. It could also embolden Republicans, who feel that this is going to be their year.
"We're licking our chops at running against President Obama," said Rand Paul, the Tea Party-supported Republican winner in Kentucky's primary over Jim Bunning.
Some also believe that Obama may be motivating Tea Party candidates to vote. A recent AP-GFK poll shows that Americans are split over Obama's job performance. The number of people who strongly disapprove (33 percent) outweighs the number of those who strongly approve (22 percent).
Making things more difficult for Obama is the runoff that was forced on Blanche Lincoln, the Democratic Senatorial candidate out of Arkansas. Obama has supported Lincoln, but is not as closely aligned with her as Arlen Specter. In prior months, Obama was not able to save the seats of former New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine or help Creigh Deeds become governor in Virginia. He was also unable to help Martha Coakley win the seat of the late Edward Kennedy in Massachusetts.
The Corzine and Deeds races were relatively complex in the sense that Corzine had a serious popularity problem, and Deeds was an underdog. The loss in Massachusetts, however, was both embarrassing and inexcusable, given that Coakley was considered a shoe-in to take over for Kennedy after he died. Equally problematic for Obama is the fact that he worked very hard on behalf of Arlen Specter, even e-mailing his supporters on Specter's behalf and telling an audience that he "loves him."
Much of the push-back that the Democrats faced during the primaries was because many Americans are sick of Washington. They are tired of seeing business as usual, politicians getting nothing done or those only doing the things that benefit themselves. Many blacks were utterly confused by Obama's decision to nominate Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court, a woman who has almost never hired black or brown people and seems to only be qualified by the fact that she has ties to Harvard and the University of Chicago. Showing additional White House loyalty to Harvard University is hardly the anti-establishment president that many Americans supported in 2008. In these primaries, Americans were voting against such an establishment.
Along with managing anti-establishment sentiment comes the challenge of mobilizing the Democratic base instead of boring them. Obama is an intelligent and a calculated politician, thinking through every move, as he should. What happens, however, is that moves that lie too close to the political center do nothing to inspire the energy and loyalty from the left that got Obama elected. The pollsters in the White House trying to figure out Obama's next move may be well-advised to ensure that the next set of actions on behalf of the president are enough to get liberals as enthusiastic as the Tea Party. If they can't match energy with energy, they are going to get slaughtered in November.

This first time commenting because after I read this first comment which wsa insulting, filled with ignorance, more than bias written by a wannabe intellectual, it is quite obvious his derogatory comments about Blackamericans only reflect who and what he has read. Your comments are interesting, the election results are not as reflective to the anger, and as some fellow Republicans like Palin and others stated during their time for political opportunism, one should not listen poles, they didn't and the first commentor on this website and Mr. Rausmaussen, ABC, NBC, CBS all made the same statement following the win of President. In case the first commentor on this website is such a great scholar because he was able to copy a website from on-line, to substantiate his point, maybe he should read Ginzberg and Eichner (1964) The Troublesome Presence. American Democracy and the Negro, before he has the audacity to proclaim Blackamericans cannot think critically. This may be tough reading for him, so I challenge him to read the late U S Senator Daniel Patrick Moyihan, whom Rasmaussen, Beck and some others loved so much. Or is the first commentor on this website too young for such material? He needs to get a life! Before writing against the President, don't forget when the Republicans took control in 1994 with their Contract on America, look where it got us. Is this what the first commentor want again? The same old thing? This is what makes thoee like himself so dangerous, because they don't know which way is up let alone down!

I wouldnt worry too much about what that first commenter says honey. He is obviously a frustrated bigot that hangs around black blogs because in his cowardice he cannot express himself face to face. Apparantly his own color has cast him off and he is desperate for our attention. I wish the moderators would not even put his inflamatory comments through but I guess even scum can voice their ignorant opinions. He is so ignorant that he does not even know that there are more white people on public assistance than black people.

My 1st comment is to Bill ... I did not vote for Pres. Obama and one of the reasons is because I don't think he is " qualified " for the position. I am what is called " old school ", ( Back in the day ), when I became eligible to vote, it was critical that an individual that was running for president during a time when our country was in war would have had the experience of serving in the armed service of the country in which he is running for office, ( then in this case, maybe there would be no doubt about his dedication/citizenship). Of all the people that I met that spoke out the loudest for Obama during and after his candidacy were white. Even today when the subject comes up, it is still more whites that make up exscuses for his lies/inaccuracies. I am not against blacks, nor am I against whites. I do know that a lot of blacks voted for Pres. Obama just because he was black, and that a lot of whites voted for him because they trusted him. I believe that both erred, black and white, because they didn't vote the " qualifications" for the office of president. Had that been the so, today there would be no issue as to his citizenship, his dedication to support the United States and it's interest, that he would consider all things before he sends my son , daughter, husband, friend, neighbor, etc., to war, ( because had he served for 'this' country, he would already have had the experience/knowledge what it is to put your life on the line for a people BEFORE he sends someone I know and love to war). By the way, I am a woman, black and retired from the United Staes Army. I don't vote 'color' I vote creditials and qualifications.

This discussion on illegal immigration, black included, is (sorry) irrelevant to me.
Attention; Mr. Rush Limbaugh
You and the rest of America are upset that President Obama rules against the people. As a black inner-city resident that is the only kind of representation I have ever had and I am the widow of a Buffalo Soldier. I have had officials who joined leftist or officials like former Congressman William Jefferson of Louisiana. As a matter of history black America has never had representation. This discussion on illegal immigration, black included, is (sorry) irrelevant to me.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Esther M. Lofton

"You may be among the rare blacks who can think critically and don't support Obama, BUT my statement remains true ... "Only Negroes still overwhelmingly support him..."
I stated that Negroes overwhelmingly support Obama, which is true, as he got 96% of the black vote and polls still show 90%+ of blacks support him while the rest of voters disapprove of him more than approve." by Bill Schrier
....indeed Mr. Schier.....

.....in addition to what you have stated, be it at the local, county, State, and/or Federal levels, a predominately unintelligent Black electorate also promote other disgraceful black elected officials (no good sleazy Mark Ridley Thomas for one of many examples) too.....
......which more so than any other reason, sends the Black community at large to the gallows!

....I concur Bill. In addition to what you have stated, President Barack Obama is but one of many misfits that a largely unintelligent Black electorate promotes into elected office, be it City, County, State, and/or Federal jurisdiction....

Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley Thomas, being yet one more of many misfits, promoted by an overwhelmingly unintelligent Black electorate!

I didn't vote for him and I refused to vote for someone that I felt had no business running for President, he has no experience. I personally think this man couldn't run a lemon aid stand let alone this great country of ours. He is and appeaser, apologizer, refuses to enforce immigration laws, etc etc. I went against all my friends wishes to vote for him because he was black, Ime wouldn't, they got over it. Now they are all having second thoughts. Can somebody tell why this guy is on TV everyday as though he has he own show, its making me sick. Hope & change, I hope he changes or the the people will in 2012.

Even the biggest liars tell the truth sometimes. It is a fact that black america did not elect the president, white america did. They did so under some misguided notion that the election of Obama would somehow appease the Black mans God and America would soon recover and things would go back to normal as they know it. This did not happen in the time frame they thought it would so now they do not know which way to turn. His job rating is low because he has not said some magical prayer, waved his hand and made everything normal.. It is a fact that black families are not jumping out of windows, killing their families, committing sucide.etc. because of the economy. Why, has nothing to do with Obama,we are accustomed to making do. It does not bother us not to eat out;we can cook at home. If we do not have cable,we play cards or dominos. We need somewhere to go, we go to church we can take the whole family for nothing. We need new clothes;we sew. About 80% out of 100% of black America do not get public assistance. We work,we do jobs that you find demeaning. See if you cannot be the head you will not be the tail. We are used to being the tail. The tail brings in a paycheck We {Black America} did not cause the wall street mess, the collapse of the auto industry, the banking mess, ect. President Obama inhhheirted this mess. Frankly speaking I would not have taken the job,but being the man he is,he waded in knee deep to try and help, must be the white part of his DNA.

You see, I wouldn't hate Obama so much if he didn't think he was being so clever and pretending to be for the people; all the while sideing with previous bush policies corporations, wall street, war industrial complex, israel, illegal immigration. He gave the people nothing in health care reform. He solidifyed the position of the insurance companies, big pharma, the ama. With no single-payor option or public option, the people are going to be hurt in this health care so-called, reform. People will now have more money taken out of their paychecks to cover their grown children until they are 27 years old. This is going to be a burden on already low paid workers in this country. His wall street reform is a joke. He doesn't have to leave these things to congress - especially since he knows they are bought and paid for by special interest. I knew we were doomed with the announcement of his cabinet picks and he relicated honest, economist to lesser positions within his administration and put the likes of timothy geitner in front. he is surrounded by jews telling him what to do. he did not have to surround himself with all these kinds of people even if they did pay for him to be there. he could have picked a better running mate who will also carry out his wishes. The rat running across the podium outside the white house is a sign, believe that.
