Alabama Evangelist Gets Life Plus 51 Years for Dead Wife in Freezer

Anthony Hopkins, an Alabama evangelist who spent years torturing his family of eight children before killing his wife and stuffing her body in a deep freezer, all while preaching the word of God at revivals, got the maximum sentence of life, plus 51 years for convictions, including sodomy and sexual abuse.

The 39-year-old evangelist stood devoid of emotion as Circuit Judge John Lockett imposed the sentence last Thursday. Assistant District Attorney Ashley Rich called Hopkins "evil of the worst kind."

Hopkins was caught having sex with a stepdaughter back in 2004 by his wife, Arletha. Hopkins then killed his 34-year-old spouse and jammed her body into a freezer with the assistance of the stepchild, who was pregnant by him at the time.

Child advocates were called about a sexual abuse complaint by one of Hopkin's two stepdaughters in 2008, and when they investigated the charges, they discovered Arletha's body. The preacher man was arrested as he ministered to a revival crowd in Jackson.

Hopkin's defense attorney, Jeff Deen, said that his client did not know how his wife died, but he does, however, admit to jamming her body into the freezer. "There's evidence in the trial that it could've been by natural causes, and it needs to be explored on appeal," Deen said.

The two oldest children, who were living with Hopkins and his wife, are living on their own now, and the six youngest are with relatives in Georgia.
