When I first got an e-mail about the new doll, Busty Barbie, I just knew this just had to be an Internet hoax. It would soon turn out that this was a fake controversy fueled by some fool in the basement with Photoshop. Looks like I was wrong.
Mattel has launched a new line of Barbie dolls called "Back to Basics (pictured below)," which features several dolls, white and black, in (what I can only term) "after-5" wear: There are off-the-shoulder dresses, strapless minis and plunging necklines. The whole thing is absolutely freaky. It's like some odd soft porno featuring call-girl dolls.
The worst offender in this travesty of a doll line is No. 10, oft referred to in the press as "Busty Barbie." This is an African American doll with a plunging neckline that exposes substantial boobage. Worse than that, though, her breasts look like those perfectly round fake-looking breasts that low-budget porn stars and all of Tiger Woods' mistresses have.
This new Barbie Basics Collection, which hit the stores in the United States, has become quite popular with kids. Quite naturally, today's mothers are very worried about its effect on their children. The suggestive wear, low-cut skirts and visible cleavage of Busty Barbie and the other dolls in this line have highly angered parents. Mothers say that they do not want their daughters to emulate the dressing patterns of the Barbie.
Andie Whitaker, a woman featured in an interview on WPTV NBC, said "What parent would buy this for their kid? Is that really an appropriate image you want to display for young women?"
Yes, this is awful, and no one should buy it, BUT the issue is a little deeper than these trampy dolls. Are the dolls really that shocking in a culture that made Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton stars? They have nothing to offer but sex appeal and sex tapes, and we can't get enough of them. Girls idolize women like Kanye's arm candy Amber Rose and Tiger's trashy mistress Rachel Uchitel, because they're attractive and they hooked up with famous men. Is it really surprising our little girls think that sexy equals successful?
When we have shows like 'Basketball Wives' that showcase attractive women whose only achievement in life has been to pull a baller and his babies, are we really that surprised when our daughters equate the potential for their lives with their sexiness level?
These dolls are just the symptom of a larger problem we have: We dropped the ball long ago and are now seeing the real effects of elevating half-hookers to star status. We failed to define what womanhood is to our daughters and instead gave the job to television.
Busty and all her other quasi-hooker friends are available at Target for a cool $19.99. Frankly, I have no problem with Mattel; it's a free market. Please don't use your precious time and energy organizing some dumb ass recall campaign or major boycott. This is America, if you don't like it, don't buy it. Done deal.
Your time would probably be better spent keeping your eye on your little girl.
21-May-10 - Its tough for a tiger to change its stripes. And in the case of the 70-year-old Julianna Farrait, wife of Frank Lucas, one of the most notorious drug kingpins in American history, prison stripes might again be a part of her wardrobe.

20-May-10 - A Memphis, Tenn., man was babysitting his girlfriend's toddler when she defecated on the floor. The man reacted to the accident by beating the 2-year-old toddler to death with a basketball shoe.
17-May-10 - Geoffrey Fieger, the attorney representing the family of Aiyana Jones, a 7-year old who was shot dead during a police raid, says police are trying to cover up the truth about what exactly happened.
18-May-10 - Vicki Valentine has had to live through the foreclosure nightmare that is affecting all of America. She recently watched a crew of men break the lock on her door and take possession of the home she owned for 30 years. Her father paid off the mortgage in 1984, only to see his daughter lose the home 26 years later over a $362 water bill.
18-May-10 - President Barack Obama's very colorful, very opinionated ex-pastor, Jeremiah Wright, is making headlines yet again, but this time it is in the form of the written word. The Associated Press came across an explosive, missive written by Wright that talks about the president in a very unflattering light.
14-May-10 - Popular 'Today' show host Matt Lauer and his wife of 12 years, Annette, have split. Word on the street is that when Lauer was in Vancouver covering the Winter Olympics, he allegedly "bumped Uggs" with Whitney Houston's half-sister, Alexis Houston. Click Here for the Complete Story
12-May-10 - Rap megastar Lil Wayne, who is currently serving time at Riker's Island due to a 2007 gun charge, was snitched on by a fellow inmate for concealing "unauthorized music contraband."
12-May-10 - The Kellogg Foundation is awarding $75 million over five years to undo the effects of racism on children in poor communities, I cheered the efforts of the Michigan-based nonprofit.
don't like it.. don't give 2 shyts if it's a AA barbie.. i wouldn't buy it 4 my kid.. it's 2 slutty lookn.. where is the jeans and tees? if she was fully dressed ppl probably wouldn't have noticed but we don't carry ourselves that way and i'll b damned if i buy a doll where the image is skanky..
Reading about this new Busty Barbie is so very disappointing but not necessarily surprising. Although it supposedly wasn't designed for children, its placement in the doll/toy department is disingenuous. And that Mattel made her African-American...Is it possible that no one at Mattel found the product offensive, racist, denigrating or did no one care? It's important for all children to have dolls that look like them, especially those of African descent, as racial perceptions form early. It's also critical for children's products to promote self-esteem, not disparage it. To that end EthiDolls.com has created a line of authentic, storied dolls celebrating inspirational, historical female leaders from Africa. With their accompanying illustrated storybooks and audio books, these dolls send positive messages to all young girls. And the message: "You can be strong, courageous, accomplished". That's a message well worth sending.
Why do you and most every other "Black American" think everybody is out to get you? This has nothing to do with race!!!!! Yall are so cought in Quanell X and all his b/s that you forget that the only raceisim in America in reverse-raceisim. You have your month, and you have your collages. If there were White only colleges the black community would have go crazy about it. The only way America will ever get better is if we all stop feeling sorry for ourselves and just live togather.
"authentic, storied dolls celebrating inspirational, historical female leaders from Africa." Do you mean women such as Winnie Mandela? You know her don't you? A murderer. Really someone for little girls to look up to. She said, "with our boxes of matches and our necklaces we shall liberate this country".[
Do I sense a little jealousy over a doll? REALLY? The women complaining need to lose weight and shape up. Yet...they both have low cut plunging necklines themselves while being interviewed????
Does anyone else notice that the first woman in the video is wearing a black shirt with a plunging open neckline that shows off most of her breasts? SHe is complaining about the Barbie, yet the clothes she is wearing certainly mimic the style. Practice what you preach- your child is watching you for signs of what is healthy and normal!
Do you think a Barbie that looked like a big, fat, overweight HOG in flip-flops and a baggy dress would sell? Think again. Only women who don't like the new Busty Barbie are the female HOGS of the world. I see them everday in public, dirty, unkept hair, no makeup, flip flops with dirty feet, and very much overweight. And who cares if Busty Barbie is black or white, she is sexy, and that is what EVERY young girl wants to be, until their fat, ugly Mother's force them to look like they do. Bring on more Busty Barbie's.

I like how the mother at the beginning has an even lower cut shirt than the barbie yet she is complaining. What a loser!
