Kanye West Joins Musicians in Boycott of Arizona Immigration Law

The Louis Vuitton Don is the latest performer to join the effort to strike down Arizona's immigration law. Rapper and producer Kanye West has committed to Sound Strike, a campaign that urges fans and artists to boycott Arizona until the immigration law, which is set to take effect at the end of July, is repealed.

The heads of several large police agencies have spoken out against the law, and Attorney General Eric Holder is expected to make a decision soon about whether he'll seek to overturn it.

Sound Strike is organized by Zack de la Rocha, former front man of Rage Against the Machine. Several artists have also expressed support for the effort, including Conor Oberst, Rage Against the Machine, Rise Against, Cypress Hill, Serj Tankian, Joe Satriani, Sonic Youth, Tenacious D, Street Sweeper Social Club and Michael Moore.

"Some of us grew up dealing with racial profiling, but this law takes it to a whole new low. If other states follow the direction of the Arizona government, we could be headed toward a pre-civil rights era reality. This unjust law was set into motion by the same Arizona government that refused to acknowledge Martin Luther King Jr. day as a national holiday," said de la Rocha on his Web site.

"When Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat, they arrested her. As a result, people got together and said we are not going to ride the bus until they change the law. It was this courageous action that sparked the Montgomery bus boycott. What if we got together, signed a collective letter saying, 'We're not going to ride the bus?'" he added.

In my opinion, this initiative is a great idea. Business owners in Arizona are already concerned about how the law will affect tourism; the owner of the Phoenix Suns has spoken out against the law and its potentially devastating economic effects. "Arizona's already struggling economy will suffer even further setbacks at a time when the state can ill afford them," Suns owner Robert Sarver said before his team wore its Los Suns jerseys to protest the law.

One of the best ways to show displeasure with is to vote with your wallet. The idea worked when Arizona refused to acknowledge the King federal holiday. More artists should join the effort to speak out against this unjust law, which will only lead to racial profiling. Congress needs to act now to address our broken immigration system.

Despite some of his antics, at least Yeezy isn't afraid to speak the truth. You remember when he had some choice words for George W. Bush about his handling of Hurricane Katrina, right? Mike Meyers is just regaining his color from the pasty shade of white he turned when Kanye went in on W. It would be great if some fellow rappers would follow Kanye's and Cypress Hill's example and take a break from talking about cars, women and how nice they are on the microphone to do something worthwhile with their fame.

That would really be gangsta.
