BlackTV247.com Aims to be the Black YouTube

Justin Beckett
likes to call his new website - Blacktv247.com - the "YouTube for black folks". There you can catch old episodes of Sanford and Son, see some never before seen Huey P. Newton footage and even check out the only daily black newscast in the country.

"We found it unacceptable that there was no daily black newscast in half a decade," said Internet entrepreneur Beckett in an interview with Black Voices. "In this information age that we live in there is news, data and specific information relevant to our community. It would be easy not to see things that are relevant to our community. With btv247.com, we are seeking to bring that information to the forefront."

Unlike YouTube, there are focused portals to help sift through the vast amount of information. There are 16 screens broadcasting a daily offering of entertainment, news or music on the site, which has a database of over 100,000 programs and is free of charge. There's currently an interview with Michael Jordan, a classic video of Muhammad Ali talking about the possibility of a black president and Wyclef Jean talking about Haitian earthquake relief efforts.

"We said we are going to adopt a content agnostic strategy. We don't care where the content comes from as long as its relevant," said Beckett. The idea for the channel actually dates back to 2008 when Beckett and his partners begin acquiring the rights to content. Beckett has been an internet entrepreneur for several years, having started and sold three companies. He started a company called Music Gaming Inc, which was subsequently sold to Intermix/My Space in 2001. Another of Beckett's companies, Fluid Music, formed a partnership with American Idol and was taken public on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

Beckett's partner Cecil Cox was a senior executive and manager of Mundy Lane Entertainment, the motion picture and television production company founded by Denzel Washington.

"In my opinion we are underrepresented among entrepreneurs. Like most untapped areas, the internet space is still below the radar. This can be started without a ton of capital. I have successfully started and exited three companies that have made money, very few which involved people of color," said Beckett.

Part of the goal of blacktv247.com is to change that. The company is looking to partner with black colleges to offer internships. In addition, a channel dedicated to show the work of black college and aspiring filmmakers is in the works. Right now, only about 15 percent of the material on the site is original content. Beckett said he hopes to see those numbers grow, especially as the newscast catches on and attracts more people to the site.

Being the black YouTube is a tall order. "Our view is that the challenge is great thing," said Beckett. "The potential that this company has is amazing".
