Anthony Thomas is considered a critically missing child from Washington, D.C. That means police think he is in severe danger. He was last seen Saturday on a D.C. street. Kyron Horman was last seen by his stepmother at his Portland, Ore., school as he walked back to his classroom, after a science fair. He never returned home and police also have strong concerns for his safety.
Both cases are potentially heart-breaking tragedies. It is a scary and sad experience anytime a child goes missing.
Type Horman and Thomas' name in to Google, though, and the results are equally as frightening. Thomas' case was reported as a brief in the Washington Post and some local television stations. He was also featured as the weekly Black and Missing person here on Aol. Black Voices.
On the other hand, Horman's story has made it on to People's website, CBS News, and Good Morning America. In addition, a full story has appeared in statewide paper, The Oregonian, and several other websites.
Now guess which child is black.
Unfortunately, the disparity in the coverage of missing people of color still exists. Natalee Hollaway is back in the news and Horman's story is getting a lot of coverage. It's great that the media attention on Horman's case could make a difference. I hope the boy is found unharmed and returned safely to his parents.
But what about all the missing Anthony's out there?
According to the FBI, 719,558 people were listed as missing in 2009. Statistics show that 238,847 were African American, that's a little more than 33 percent of the total. African Americans only make up 12 percent of the country's population.
Minorities accounted for more than 38 percent of the total of missing people, but it could be higher because some Hispanics and Latinos are classified as white based on appearance, according to the FBI.
With numbers like that, you'd think missing minorities would get more attention in the nation's media outlets and on shows like "Nancy Grace." It's been proven time and time again, however, that missing minorities get less attention.
Sara Libby at True Slant took on People for featuring Horman while not mentioning Thomas.
She writes:
Certainly no publication has the resources or the space to cover each youngster who goes missing – but given their similar ages, the times at which they disappeared, and the relative mystery surrounding both – wouldn't it make sense for People to mention both boys? Since they didn't, it's legitimate to assume that race might have played a role in the coverage. People is notorious for covering the cases of missing white women – Natalee Holloway, Caylee Anthony, Madeleine McCann, Laci Peterson, etc. – in exhausting and excruciating detail, while women with similar stories like Mitrice Richardson get far less coverage (Richardson made a People magazine cover, but shared it with a group of other missing persons, while white women like Holloway received their own covers – sometimes more than once).

In the case of Mitrice Richardson, a young woman who went missing after police released her from a remote police station with no car and no money, even though she had been acting strange, her father, Micheal Richardson, has been on a crusade to make sure his daughter received both the media and law enforcement attention her case deserved.
Still, as Libby points out, she shared the People cover. If there was ever a case to receive the type of overheated, non-stop media coverage that the Holloway or Jon Benet Ramsey case received, it would be Richardson. She's a beautiful young woman and her father was questioning whether the way police released her contributed to her going missing.
Black men and boys get even less attention than black women and girls. Of the 558,000 people under the age of 18 listed as missing last year, 194,000 are black, according to FBI statistics.
Sometimes there's the false assumption that black kids are runaways or just troubled. Other times, maybe the story isn't "sexy" enough.
Media attention, though, can make the difference as to whether or not a case is solved. The increased media attention can help the public be more alert to the missing person and keep police on their toes.
It is up to media outlets to not only look at what sells. There is a public service element to the media. That means the media should make an effort to be aware of and deal with these sorts of discrepancies in coverage.

I am so heart-broken to hear this story. I mean I know kid's are coming up missing at an alarming rate, but for it to be decided who's story is more interesting or what color they are is what determines who get's heard is so wrong on so many levels. When will people stop looking at color for the deciding factor on whether you get decent coverage or even help? A missing person is a missing especially a missing kid, they all need people to be out there working just as hard as the next missing person to locate and help them out.

Why is this so hard to see?
Could it be that the rest of the country sees how black kids are treated by their own community vs. how white kids are treated by theirs?
When 70% of black kids are born to unwed mothers - many of whom don't have the means to raise them properly - AND when black fathers are not expected to help raise the kids they produce like human trophies, is it any wonder the rest of the population puts a lower sense of urgency on finding them when they disappear? Where are the parents of this black kid? Why are they sitting back hoping for the best while the parents of the white kid are making a media storm?
We all know there are a host of cultural differences to be celebrated by both races. Maybe this is simply a cultural issue. Maybe the whites have more emotionally invested in each of their kids while the blacks just make as many as they can and hope everything turns out ok for them. Who's to say what's right or wrong - quality or quantity?

So that's ur fkn reason for the less coverage of a black kid?! So it's the kids fault for being born to black people? You're a fkn dumb@ss NO ONE DECIDES WHO'M THEIR BORN TO! You didn't have a choice & neither did this kid. I swear to God it's whites like you that make the rest of us whites look evil & non caring to other races.. now you see why most people of color all over the planet hate us! Look if you have nothing worth while to say please just sht the fvck up! ahole! A poor kid is missing I'm a dad of 2 boys & most parents would not agree with you..so keep blaming the victim & I hope you don't have kids & I hope they don't go missing jerk!

I know you mean well (I guess)but you come off as if you are saying that Whites love THEIR kids more. Whites will MOVE heaven and earth for their kids. White kids are their parents PRIDE and JOY,etc. Black parents feelings towards their kids..."meh". Everything POSITIVE=White. Everything NEGATIVE=Black. It reminds me of an interview I read on the movie "Sounder" and Cicely Tyson said that a White lady once came up to her and told her how touching the movie was. She also said she didn't think Black people could love like that. Now that's what your post sounds like. I can't speak for anyone else, but I love all four of mine. And my WIFE. So please don't fit me into the little "box" you've created. And I hope both boys are returned safely and that God is with them.

Mike:
The kid's fault?? Did you read what I wrote? I was blaming the black community for not being involved with the welfare of their kids as much as whites. Just look at black performance in school compared to whites - with very few exceptions whites outperform blacks in the same school with the same teachers by margins that make headlines. Why?? Big mystery solved - parental involvement. It carries right on through life. Kids will strive to live up to the expectations of their parents - low expectations make for low achievement.
I will say that there is racism in the media when it comes to making a big deal out of whites vs. blacks, and that I blame on the demographics of the audience. Media does what sells and with a majority of the audience being white, missing white kids sell more papers than missing black kids. Sad but true.

Your a piece of work. A single mother of a black child has more love for him/her than you can imagain. You sound really ignorant. Mike is so right about what he said. Your statement compares to the slavery days when whites who beat black slaves believed that it didn't hurt as much because the HIDE was thicker. Think about that. Your saying the emotion is less because the skin is black? And because you think black communities don't care so why should you? What a bunch of crap.

oh yeah and your comments about black and white education is not true anymore. You need to be updated and stop looking in the poverty ridden school districts or the ghettos of the cities 4 your information. Even in those places some kids excel. If you compared those numbers to the white kids in trailer parks you would find the same outcome. Black and white kids in advantage schools and stronge communities are almost compatible in education. Unfortunately the lower scoring students are latino. You need to get your head straight. It's ignorance like yours that keeps people from standing side by side and walking together. Fortunately the children of today are not blinded by race. We have a chance with the next generation who embrace each other black/white kids, teens, and young adults. They are the future and with their attitudes it is definitely going to be better. More blacks are in college and in case you didn't realize, only because the media focus on the negative about black families, there are more 2 parent homes now than the single mother drama and absent dad. Even single black mothers are college bound and educated. The latter still is around but not in the numbers it use to be. Get educated yourself and find the truth.

You as a human being should be ashamed of yourself. For you to say black parents have no sense of urgency is a cop out. You as a white man have privilage based solely on your race. So no you can't understand. As a human being you should have compassion for both set of parents. How do we know if the black child didn't have a father? you are ASSUMING and we all know what that does. Maybe if the WHITE MEDIA was fair we would know if he had a father. then we could focus on finding the child. No white childs life is worth more than a black child. In god's eyes we are all equal. Ron find you compassion for a family in grieving. it should not be about race.

From sissy...:
"Black and white kids in advantage schools and stronge communities are almost compatible in education."
If that were true, you would be agreeing with me that it's the parenting and community that makes the difference. If you look at SAT scores, which are college-bound kids, not ghetto drop-outs and trailer trash, it paints a different picture.

There isn't a year or a subject that black students aren't the worst score on the chart compared to all other races.
The rest of your facts and figures show that you are blinded by love and hope, which is not all bad. Optimism is a powerful thing.

Ron,
Are you aware that number for number whites lead in welfare, to include medical assistance, monetary stipend, and subsidized housing. They also lead in alcoholism, drug abuse, and child abuse, to include physical, mental as well as sexual abuse of their own children. They also lead in pornograhy, adultery, theft and murder. They also lead in unwed pregnancies, abortions and sexual transmitted diseases. Did you also know that your government reports these facts in terms of percentages so that the white race, who, by the way is the dominant race, will appear to have less maladaptive behaviors than the rest of society.
