Have you ever fantasized about going back to high school and doing all the things you wish you'd done the first time around? Maybe ask out that girl across the room in Biology class or join the Math team to get that scholarship? Well, I don't recommend trying this at home, since such a feat might land you in prison.
A 22-year-old man is accused of posing as a high school basketball star in West Texas and has been indicted on six felonies, ranging from sexual assault to tampering with government records. In other words, he's in trouble. Bobby Bland, the District Attorney for Ector County, stated that the indictment alleges that Guerdwich Montimer changed his name to Jerry Joseph and committed identity theft in the process. He played basketball at Odessa Permian High School, the same school whose football team was featured in the movie, "Friday Night Lights."
During his return to the glory days, Montimer led his team to the first round of the playoffs and was named the District 2-5A Newcomer of the Year. The award was taken away, and the team has to forfeit its 16 wins.
The two counts of sexual assault were related to alleged attacks on a 15-year-old girl in August. Jabari A. Caldwell, who enrolled Montimer at a Junior High School two years ago using a fake birth certificate from Haiti, is also facing four felonies. Both men face three counts of tampering with government records and one count of fraudulent use of identifying information. Each faces up to 20 years in prison for the tampering charge, two years for the identity-theft charge and another 20 years on the sexual assault conviction. They will be arraigned on June 16th.
I admit that I was shocked that the actions of Montimer (other than the sexual assault, of course) could lead to such severe penalties. Obviously, the sexual assault should be taken very seriously, but I would argue that a total of 20 - 40 years in prison for both men on the other charges might be too much. At the very least, we are all now abundantly aware that seemingly harmless changes of identity can lead to very stiff consequences, especially when minors are involved.
01-June-2010 - In an effort to tackle the latest crisis, the horrendous BP oil spill in the Gulf Coast, Bill Maher thinks Obama needs to act more like a "real black president" and go in to the BP meetings flashing his gat.
25-May-2010 - Ex-police Lt. Jon Burge may have overseen the torture of and obtained coerced confessions from more than 100 African-American men over the course of a 22-year career.
27-May-2010 - CNN was a little embarrassed after accidentally playing a rap song with the N-word in it. The gaffe was part of a segment about a 103-year-old woman, Gladys Flamer, who still drives herself around and lives alone in Coatsville, Pa.
25-May-2010 - Mattel has launched a new line of Barbie dolls called "Back to Basics (pictured below)," which features several dolls, white and black, in (what I can only term) "after-5" wear: There are off-the-shoulder dresses, strapless minis and plunging necklines. The whole thing is absolutely freaky. It's like some odd soft porno featuring call-girl dolls.
24-May-2010 - The 21-year-old R&B sensation recently went on a Tweeting tirade against Atlanta-based celeb gossip blogger Sandra Rose. Reportedly, Brown resorted to attacking the blogger's complexion by using juvenile "you're so black" jokes.
23-May-2010 - If I'm blessed enough to live past my 10th decade on this planet, then 103-year-old Gladys Flamer is going to be my blueprint for how to behave after I pass the century mark.
Why are you taking up for him? He posed as a teenage student which means he was interactng with teenage girls & probably trying to date them too. I have no sympathy for perpetrators of identity theft either-that is a crime that takes a lifetime to correct for the poor unsuspecting victim (s).
I think it was more sad than criminal for him to pose as a highschooler. But for him to be prosecuted for felonies is ridiculous. A lot of the high school girls today act like stone cold sluts. From what I teaad they were not raped they willingly had sex with him as they did with other boys at their school. Plus, I would bet that once this story media some of them probably wanted to benefit from this finacially. I think he's suffered enough doesn't need to be railroaded into the criminal justice system for making a pathetic mistake.
