Ex-gang member says Chicago officer suffocated him

A former gang member says the ex-Chicago cop accused of torturing more than 100 black men may have looked in the room while he was being suffocated and beaten by officers.

Gregory Banks
, 46, said police handcuffed him and placed a plastic bag over his head in addition to sticking a .45 in his mouth and beating him in the chest with a flashlight.

Banks said Lt. Jon Burge did not participate in the abuse but may have looked in on the beating while it was happening.

Burge is on trial for lying about the abuse in a civil suit. The statute of limitations has expired and Burge cannot be tried for the acts of abuse he is alleged to have committed or overseen.

"I couldn't breathe," Banks said. "I was handcuffed, so there was nothing I could do."

Eventually, the abuse was too much and Banks signed a murder confession. An appeals court later ruled the confession was coerced and the murder conviction overturned. Banks won a civil suit against the police department but none of the officers were ever charged for the incident.

Banks was no angel. He admitted to being a member of the Black Gangster Disciples for 20 years. He also has eight burglary convictions and admitted to being a former heroin addict. He says he's been clean for four years now and is studying to be a drug counselor.

Burge's defense attorneys went on the attack, but Bank's responded, "Remember this, I'm not on trial."

He's right. Despite the past mistakes he made in his life, police do not have the right to beat people and coerce confessions. That's just plain lazy. They get paid to do police work and beating and suffocating confessions out of black men does not count as such.
