I am not quite sure what to make of the ruffled YouTube video that is now scouring the web out of Paterson, New Jersey. In the video, the woman filming, who mentions that her mother works in the sheriff's office, is taping a New Jersey police officer holding a black man to the ground. The man clearly has his hands behind his back and appears to be restrained.
As the woman videos the incident from a distance, the officer inexplicably grabs the man, turns him around and puts pepper spray in to his eyes. He appears to do it twice.
Noticing the woman in the background and people watching, the officer picks the defendant up off the ground and approaches the group using quite a bit of profane language. He also mentions something about whether or not the woman saw crack on the ground around the defendant. The video is certainly disturbing, and better video resolution might have been helpful to determine what was going on. All the while, you could clearly see some disturbing actions in the video, which might likely be a case of very serious police brutality.
While we should leave it to the court of law to decide exactly what happened in this incident, here are some quick thoughts that went through my mind:
1) (The obvious one) For what reason did the officer feel the need to put pepper spray into the eyes of a suspect who'd already been detained? If he is lying on the ground with his hands secured behind his back, it makes no sense to spray something in his eyes. This kind of cruel and unusual punishment is not justified just because the person is accused of committing a crime.
2) Why does the officer feel that it is acceptable or necessary to tell innocent bystanders to "get the f*ck out of here, unless you wanna go with him"? Sorry officer, but you must understand that your authority over the citizens of the community is not absolute. You have no right to use abusive and disrespectful language toward citizens, the same way they are not allowed to be disrespectful toward you. Secondly, the idea that the officer believes that he can threaten to take people to jail because they were observing and evaluating him conducting his duties is incredibly problematic.
3) How often does this happen in cases that go unreported? For every case in which someone happens to be standing around taping an incident, there are likely thousands of other cases we don't know about. If police officers wonder why the community has a difficult time trusting them, incidents like this are the reason why.
The bottom line is that part of the reason the relationship between police officers and the black community is so fractured (even worse in Paterson, N.J.) is because officers sometimes believe that it's OK to keep the entire community in a frightened police state. Officers, who are often unable to sort out the bad from the good, tear down the doors of innocent citizens in drug raids and don't even fix the damage that was done to the house (this happened to a friend of mine twice when she was a little girl). They stop black men and harass us without just cause for doing so. They sometimes even beat the heck out of 15-year-old kids.
Now, the most egregious behavior doesn't happen in every precinct and is not committed by every officer., but this video is a reminder that there must be a new paradigm of police interaction with the community. Officers must understand that they are positioned to work with the community and not against it. While it appears that the young man in this video may have done something wrong, the idea of spraying him, cursing at citizens and threatening to take them to jail just for watching is absolutely unacceptable. There needs to be an investigation.

Stories and videos like this make me so proud of our police forces.
What courage to go into a Negro neighborhood to get the bad guys. While they're fighting to subdue the beast, other peripheral Negroes circle around like jackals. But, despite all this, the brave
policemen persevere and arrest the criminal. A criminal who was clearly hopped up on dope.
Remember to support your Fraternal Order of Police.
Also, if you live in Paterson NJ write to the city to commend and support these brave officers.

@smittyt.... what you do to repay someone that would leave a comment like the one that obviously upset, " you" .... a great deal is something that doesn't make you so enraged , because if they think that way , and comment that way , they have little regaurd for what is in fact your life , with the push of a button they would take your life ... and in an subsequent way ... they do just that ... by simply pushing buttons on a keypad .... they cause " you" exteme rage that probably elevates your blood pressure to 150 over 100 for up to an hour .... dont react this way ... there are lots of healthier more strategic ways to repay these commentors as you go about your day ... for instance ... because this racist j@ck@ss has dared to venture into my path ... his comment draws a penalty ... for that penalty ... some bad luck will be fall someone whom i feel fits the general descriptoin of the commentor(some reverse profiling ... a cut tire maybe , he wont filr that claim.. so its straight out of pocket ... just pay it forward and live a healthy life........you're quite welcome

@smittyt.... and the good thing about this new law is it keeps you healthy and over time it just my create change , and also , you get to determine how many penalties there are for each commentlike this you read , your more upset than me ,so you may think the commentor deserves a 10 tire penalty , just keep your box cutter with you .. hit it right on the side wall so they cant fix it ....humm this is really quite ingenius , i amaze myself sometimes ,we can use this one idea to propell us from second to last to first from now on , in fact we should all invest in tires right now ... WOW ... i'm getting goose bumps , but you have to get tires or something ... otherwise , they actually do get away with it.....KABOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!

It's "interesting" how all the messages before this one....FOCUS on the messages from the White racists.
Whenever you see their names at the beginning of a message....DO NOT READ IT...IGNORE IT..They are only here to take your minds off the articles...and fuss with them.

Thank you John. I don't know why people get so distracted to answer someone who claims to be white, but in fact could be black or some other nationality? People hide behind screen names to vent hate for other races, including their own. Police Officers will forever go overboard because they know they can get away with it. They think they're above the law.

I say just dont send the police to that location. Let the people there handle it for themselves. He was arrested for crack and had more in his mouth and when told to spit it out he refused. When sprayed he spit it out. Like boyce these people stick up for the criminal just because he is black. I would love to see a crack dealer pepper sprayed in my location regardless of color, maybe it would keep them away and my kids could play without fear of being shot. They just dont get it! So I say just dont send the cops there at all ( unlsess of course the cops are black)

Wow, And people think just because we have a Black president, racism doesn't exist. Racism is more prevalent than ever, and you can see it in every situation. We just saw it in this video and in the comments the "Bill Fool" made. Would you say we have truly overcome?

Bill, where have you been all these years? We are no longer referred to as Negroes. It is either African American or Black. Get a life.
