Nelson Mandela Attends Great-Granddaughter's Funeral

In the midst of the merriment of the World Cup in South Africa -- a first for the entire continent of Africa -- came the sorrowful news that South Africa's first black president and liberation icon Nelson Mandela and ex-wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela lost their 13-year-old great-granddaughter, Zenani Mandela, in an auto accident. Mandela chose not to attend the celebratory opening for the World Cup he had fought for as he mourned the loss of his beautiful great-granddaughter.
The Soweto Gospel Choir performed as guests arrived. The service, held at the chapel of St. Stithians College, was led by fellow classmates dressed in smart blue uniforms.

Alongside them stood hundreds of mourners, including some of the biggest names from South Africa's liberation movement like George Bizoz, the veteran human rights lawyer who once represented Mandela, and the Winnie. Mourners, including Zenani's classmates in school blazers, each held a single white rose. They stood to sing 'Amazing Grace' as the funeral began. She was a member of the school's choir, marimba club and drum corps.

According to a report by the BBC, an anguished message was read during the service from Zenani's mother, Zoleka Mandela-Seakamela, daughter of Mandela's daughter Zindzi Mandela.

Zoleka said she wished she had indulged her daughter more, allowing her to sleep in late and wear makeup."I should have given you more hugs, more kisses," she said.

The car's driver, a family friend, was arrested and initially charged with drunk driving, but he is not due in court until after the World Cup ends. South Africa has one of the world's worst road-safety records, and there is an average of 42 deaths each day on roads across the country.

This was a truly sad day in South Africa and around the world amid the joy of being the first African country to host the World Cup. Condolences to the family and friends of Zenani Mandela.
