Maya Angelou gets her dot on Jackson portrait‎

Be one of 1 million dots in the Michael Jackson tribute portrait project, says poetess extraordinaire Maya Angelou, who is asking King of Pop fans to be featured as a dot on an upcoming pointillism portrait by famed artist David Ilan.

Pointillism is an art form that uses hand-drawn dots to create images. Angelou, whose dot was placed in Jackson's heart area is just one of several celebs who are committed to this unique project. Folks like Diana Ross, Floyd Mayweather, Jr., George Lopez and Gladys Knight have been represented by one dot in the yet-to-be-completed portrait.

Angelou, who says Jackson had a special place in her heart, also wrote a poem for the megastar, which was read by Queen Latifah at his funeral.

The portrait dot project invite is not only open to celebs -- all Jackson fans are being asked to join in and become a dot. "The dots are all the same size, and each one is vital to the finished portrait. Each dot individually tells a story of one person, but when the dots work together, that is when the drawing is formed and a purpose is achieved. In essence, people are working together to create a drawing," says Ilan.

The artist is hopeful that he can get 1 million Jackson fans to contribute to his very ambitious undertaking. Each person who becomes part of the drawing is also given the opportunity to attach a message to his or her dot. Every dot project has a charitable wing. People sign up for their dot online for free. A dot is not drawn on the canvas until someone signs up for it.

So far, there are 250,000 dots from fans in 180 countries.

Come on, connect these dots!
