Washington (CNN) -- President Barack Obama on Wednesday replaced Gen. Stanley McChrystal as commander of U.S. and allied forces in Afghanistan and nominated Gen. David Petraeus to replace him while affirming support for a counterinsurgency strategy encountering problems.
The dramatic shift came a day after McChrystal's disparaging comments about America's civilian leadership surfaced, and reignited the national debate on the war in Afghanistan -- now in its eighth year with a June death toll of coalition forces that is close to becoming the highest of the war.
Obama accepted McChrystal's resignation "with considerable regret" and named Petraeus, the head of the U.S. Central Command, to take over pending Senate confirmation.
"It is the right thing for our mission in Afghanistan, for our military and for our country," Obama said outside the White House, flanked by top civilian and military leaders including Vice President Joe Biden; Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Defense Secretary Robert Gates, and Petraeus.
McChrystal's remarks in a Rolling Stone article undermined the civilian control of the military "at the core of our democratic system," Obama said, noting the decision to replace the general did not involve any disagreement over strategy or personal issues.
"I believe that it is the right decision for our national security," Obama said. "The conduct represented in the recently published article does not meet the standard that should be set by a commanding general."

McCRYSTAL only told the truth about our manchild president and how he is running this war! And why would he replace him with Gen.Petraeus whom he never liked and was president George Bush`s pick to lead and win the Iraqi war. When then senator Barrack Obama said the war could not be won in Iraq. And now Obama expects Gen.Petraeus to win the Afgan. war in less than a year?

President Obama was absolutely justified in his actions - it is insubordination for a man in McCrystals position to berate the President and Vice Pres or to tolerate or encourage such behavior from his troops! Men like McCrystal are destructive from within...with all of the groups that would love to see the US fail we do not need to destroy ourselves from within!

In response to "1 Brotha" -- try airing "your truth" about your boss in whichever forum you wish and see where that gets you. McCrystal, just like you, showed total disrespect for the person in charge. No one asked him to like the boss but respect is mandatory on any job if you want to keep it. It's amazing to me that anyone would think otherwise. We know the real issue with the general as well as with you but that is your and his problem. Like it or not, there is a person of color in the White House and he, like all others before him, will make mistakes and not everyone will agree with his decisions but he is still the President. No amount of nasty remarks or name-calling will change that fact. I think the President has shown a remarkable amount of restraint and class in his handling of all of the negative and sometimes racist remarks about him since he took office. But McCrystal's behavior was over-the-top and could not be ignored -- not because it was personal for the President but because it was unprofessional and a buffoon approach to a remedy for what many are saying was the general's frustration with the administration. It was smart not to give this guy a pass on his behavior. It's apparent he is use to doing and/or saying what he wants and getting away with it because of who he is -- his arrogance is very transparent. So, your support for the general doesn't make his actions any less wrong.

ARE THE WORDS MORE POWERFUL THAN ANY LEVEL OF WAR???
A Glass of Fire
A real soldier
never knew where and when
he is going to die - and die
for his country or for a fair cause
is to grow and spread hope and
courage to a new generation.
A real soldier
born frequently as fire in the water,
by wisdom and knowledge always knew
when to reach the front line
where the flag must be hoisted.
A real soldier
die for his country or for a fair cause
is to raise monumentally the patriotism
into the coward minds...

Just a year ago McChrystal was a loyal subordinate, now he makes these comments without regard to the issues pressing his CIC, meanwhile his own soldiers are dying under his command and his only out is to put Obama on the spit because he knows it's an option.
I wouldn't have accepted his resignation. Instead, I would've prosecuted him under the UCMJ for insubordination and burnt his hyper-opinionated ass, then told him to talk to the Rolling Stone from Leavenworth.
