Supreme Court extends rights of gun owners

Something about the cold steel of a handgun gets the nation's highest court all excited. So excited in fact that it is willing to suspend common sense and allow (perhaps even encourage) more guns to flood the streets even though we all want safer communities.

By a 5-4 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that state governments can not legally ban most Americans from owning most types of handguns, ruling that the Second Amendment mandates that gun ownership is permitted for "self-defense."

Two years ago, the Supreme Court's Heller decision struck down Washington, D.C.'s tough handgun ban. Today's decision reverses a gun ban in Chicago and extends to city and state jurisdictions.

I suppose that for that number of Americans who just don't feel complete without a gun in the house, the ruling makes sense. And I can see some logic in the argument that the bad guys in the streets already have guns, so their own legal purchases simply evens the playing field with lawbreakers.

But the problem is that when a crook breaks into a house and steals a legally purchased gun, guess what? The bad guys have added another weapon to their arsenal.

It is simple logic that cannot be escaped: More guns on the street make us all more vulnerable.

If citizens and lawmakers in communities like Washington, D.C. and Chicago decide the best way to fight street crime is to ban guns, why should the Supreme Court tie their hands?
