US Warns of Al-Qaida Threat in Burkina Faso

The U.S. State Department believes a group of al-Qaida terrorists in North Africa are plotting to kidnap an American or another Westerner in northern Burkina Faso.

The U.S. Embassy, in the capital of Ouagadougou, have informed Americans there that it had information that an unnamed terrorist group is looking to abduct a U.S. citizen near the city of Ouahigouya. The embassy is urging U.S. citizens to avoid travel to the area.

The area of Burkina Faso and neighboring Mali is considered a vulnerable region that is ripe for terrorist activity.

Authorities say that militants work with local criminals who kidnap tourists and then sell them for ransoms. Earlier this year, a French hostage was released after four members of a terrorist group were freed by a court in Mali.

In addition, a British tourist was killed by kidnappers after Britain refused to pay ransom.

A gold-rich nation (as pictured below) in West Africa, Burkina Faso is trying to lure international mining companies to help it achieve its mining potential. It would help to get the problem with kidnapping of foreigners under control before that happens.
