SC Senate Nominee Alvin Greene Should Step Up or Step Aside

Alvin GreeneSouth Carolina Democratic Senate nominee Alvin Greene should run a campaign or fade back into the shadows.

Greene, an unemployed military veteran with no political experience and no money, beat former state lawmaker Vic Rawl by a margin of 50 percent to 41 percent. Greene didn't even campaign.

Many have questioned how Greene, who was granted a public defender for a charge of showing obscene photos to a college student, came up with the $10,000 election-filing fee.

He has been completely incoherent in some interviews. Some have questioned whether he is a Republican plant, and Rawl has asked for an investigation into voting machine irregularities.

Nothing has come of those investigations yet, but Greene wouldn't be the first incoherent candidate (Sarah Palin's incoherent ramblings have made her a media star and a wealthy woman). All of which means Greene is the candidate for now, and he needs to start acting like one if he wants to be taken seriously.

Instead, the picture of Greene keeps growing more odd. He was a withdrawn teen referred to as "turtle." He's suffered some painful setbacks in his life, with the death of his mother from cancer and a younger brother from cystic fibrosis. Those in his hometown say he is smarter than he looks, but Greene has yet to prove it.

The AP writes:

At the small businesses surrounding his hometown about 50 miles southeast of Columbia, plenty of people have heard of Greene. But from the post office to the small diners to the shop that sells CDs and other merchandise, few know much about him. ....After dozens of interviews, the candidate has begun to shun reporters, wearily asking what the story is going to be about and sometimes refusing to talk.

"I've told him he needs to get people to do that kind of stuff, but he's hardheaded and doesn't listen," said Greene's brother James Jr.

Even at the barbershop, where most black men aren't afraid to chop it up about politics and life in general, Greene remains quiet, his barber said.

Still, Greene says he's excited about challenging Republican Jim DeMint.

"I want a debate. A September debate," Greene said after he won the primary. "A good September debate, just compare and contrast the issues."

Well, it's July now and Greene owes the voters an explanation about how he plans to improve South Carolina and the nation. We are at war with record-breaking joblessness, busted infrastructure and a broken immigration system.

Voters need to hear where Greene stands on these issues. Nothing I've heard from the man thus far makes me confident that he's capable of explaining his position on these issues. If not, he should step aside.
