A criminal investigation should be opened for two officers who
Tasered and pepper-sprayed a 57-year-old Georgia woman who called police to report a prowler.
Janice Wells, a third-grade teacher, called officers in rural Georgia for help. Instead, she ended up on the ground screaming and crying, begging officers to stop shocking her with the Taser.
"All of it's just unreal to me. I was scared to death," Wells told the
Atlanta Journal Constitution. "He kept Tasing me and Tasing me. My fingernails are still burned. My leg, back and my butt had a long scar on it for days."
The horrible incident was captured on one of the officer's dash camera. In the video, officer
Ryan Smith is shown driving to the scene. He exits the vehicle with Taser in hand and immediately begins using it on Wells, who screams in pain.
"Get in the car. Get in the car. You're going to get it again," Smith says in the video.
"I ain't do nothin'," Wells says between shocks.
The Tasering occurred after another officer,
Tim Murphy of
Richland Police Department, used pepper spray while trying to arrest the woman.
Both men lost their jobs as a result. Smith resigned, and Murphy was fired. Wells has retained a lawyer and should exercise her right to sue for police abuse.
However, after looking at the video, it seems that law enforcement authorities should investigate the use of excessive force.
Smith told the Atlanta Journal Constitution that he did nothing wrong:
"I did what I had to do to take control of the situation," he said.
His former boss thought otherwise:
"I couldn't believe it," said Lumpkin Police Chief
Steven Ogle . "You don't use it [a Taser] for punitive reasons, to prod someone. It was evident it was an improper use of force. He was an excellent officer other than that incident."
Maybe so, but if two officers can't get a nonviolent 57-year-old woman into a police car without Tasering and pepper-spraying her, then maybe they shouldn't be cops.
To make matters worse, Smith has already been hired by another Sheriff's department.
Stewart County Sheriff
Larry Jones, who knows Wells, arrived at the scene a few seconds after Smith Tased Wells.
To Jones, race played a role in how Wells was treated:
"I don't think they would have done a white female like that," said Jones, who is black. "If they had, it wouldn't have been any doubt about whether they need[ed] to be terminated."
The altercation seems to have started after Wells refused to tell police the name of a man who was at her home.
Police suspected possible domestic abuse. The incident took a turn for the worse from there.
"I fell to the ground. I was balled up, and I was begging him to leave me alone," Wells said. "Then he called for help."
That makes this case even more egregious. If officers suspected that the woman had been domestically abused and she did not have a weapon or pose a threat to officers, then they should have handled the situation with a measure of compassion instead of abusing her further.

ricky, IT IS JUST A MATTER OF FACT THAT RACE IS AT THE CORE OF MOST OF THESE INCIDENT. IF IT WASN'T WHY DO 90% OF SUCH HAPPEN IN BLACK COMMUNITIES INVOVING WHITE COPS? IT IS BECAUSE THERE IS A HISTORY OF THEM GETTING AWAY WITH IT THERE. BLACK PEOPLE ARE NOT THE ONES WHO MADE EVERYTHING ABOUT RACE IN THIS COUNTRY, WHITE PEOPLE ARE. BUT WE WILL DEAL WITH IT JUST LIKE WE HAVE BEEN SINCE 1619 WHEN THE FIRST ENSLAVED AFRICANS ARRIVED IN JAMESTOWN,VA.

ricky....this is not about a RACE card being thrown. It is about a COP using a TASER on a OLDER WOMAN who posed absolutely NO THREAT at all. Be true to yourself and research. If you find a story ANYWHERE that reports a white cop who tasers an older woman of the white race who posed no threat and laughed about it....come back and let me know. When you rule out all else....the only reason left to explain why these things happen is RACE.

News flash ricky,Race is the very reason you have bad cops acting out their hatred of others in the name of enforcing the law. White people call it a race card being played, until it happens to them which is rare event in their neighborhoods. Only if they are totally out of control and then police still use restraint, before tasing them. These police used tasers on this black women, like you would use a electrical cow prod on cattle.

Actually Clarke, Ricky is right on the button! Peepz always say this only happens in black areas which is sooo not true. It's just when it happens in white areas(and I am talking real areas not some ultra elite rich one, which most of us do not live in) no one notices/cares and it's just assumed the cop was right and that is the end of it! But the problem I have with people, escpecially this Officer Larry Jones, is when you call it racist instead of just police brutality(which is what it is when it happens, there is so not enough info about what actually went down in this article to even be able to make a solid valid judgement) then it makes it a different issue that is going to get less support! Now if it is looked at/investigated and written about as just police abuse then there will be a entirely bigger group of people concerned and interested. That means blacks, whites, latino's and on and on. But calling it racist is not only wrong in most cases but it hurts the fight and struggle of all people to expose and stop police abuse! Not to say that there are not racist cops out there, that's not my point! It's just when every exchange between a white cop and a black citizen is automatically called racist it just weakens it for future cases that are truely racist. I hope you understand where I'm coming from(and that is for real, I am not some azz that comes on here to stir crap up but on the other hand not some push over to buy everything that is told to me either, I will continue to look into this story from different sources to try and be able to draw a solid conclusion)some times w/my adhd I dont always explain things as clearly as I think I am. This officer Larry James should of never said something like that, unless he has seen this other officer in the same situation with a white lady and he just let her go, he has no idea what is in some one's mind. I was watching cops just the other day, I white lady called police cause her ex was there and had a knife. When the two white cops showed up she decided now not to talk/help the cops. She just said he was gone and then tried to close the door on them. The cops kept the door open and was trying to find out info about him and if he did have a knife. She again did not want to talk to them and tried to close the door again. Well at that point the cuffs came out and she went to jail for obstructing the investigation. And this happens all the time, day in and day out!! Just cause you don't see it does not mean it does not happen. And no news is going to cover it, who would care or listen! So again my main point is if we call it what it is, police abuse, then we will have a stronger and larger amount of people who will care!

I do agree that I am sick of the race card being thrown out but the bottom line is she should not have been tased. I am far from being a racest but I need to speak now if there is such an issue of race with cops doing things then get more black cops out there why arent they applying also I live in a fairly nice community mixed with many races but it is the black teens and children that are destroying things here they go to the pool and ride bikes in there they break the chairs there they throw them in the pool I have seen them smoking weed outside in the open and selling I have gone to my laundry room last night to find 2 teens in there making out then daring me to say anything as a group of their friends came in all the while my 6 yr old son hearing the man tell the girl suck this and you gonna suck me off and you need to give me some money if you love me WHERE IS THE RESPECT SO DONT GO SAYNG HOW IT IS NOT THE BLACKS DOING THINGS IN MOST CASES IT IS. if you dont want to be stereotyped then stop what is going on as far as one person said about it going on since slavery get thet hell over it none of us owned slaves and you were not a slave and never lived it so grow up and start trying to change the way things are now. It is up to us to make our kids examples so do something about your kids dont blame for what they are bringing on themselfs i feel bad for that lady it should never have happen and yes they should get in alot of trouble for what they did. but as in the recent riots in oakland how smart is it to tear up your own neighborhoods over something that happen and hurting innocent people for something someone else does NOT ALL WHITE PEOPLE ARE RACEST AS NOT ALL BLACK PEOPLE ARE STOP PUNISHING EVERYONE FOR THE ACTIONS OF SOME. for the record i am white and i have mixed children i would be the first person to stand up for someoen who is wronged black or white and have been called a race traitor for sticking up mostly for black people but i am getting sick and tired of the race card being thrown up on everything GROW UP
