More Pressing Issues For NAACP Than Tea Party Racism

I think the NAACP is wasting its time by passing a resolution asking the Tea Party to repudiate racism. It's like asking a leopard to change its spots.

It's good to hear where the Tea Party is coming from. That makes it easier to identify and dismiss the racists and loons and expose the group's attempts to hide its racist beliefs behind the mantra of patriotism.

Frankly, the NAACP should continue to focus on issues, such as health care reform, education and unemployment. I'm more concerned about urban education than ignorant Tea Party members holding racist signs and spouting uninformed rhetoric. The fact that the black unemployment rate is double that of whites is an issue the NAACP needs to continue to address.

Suprisingly though, Hilary Shelton of the NAACP and Mark Skoda of the Memphis Tea Party were able to have a civil conversation on CNN recently.

Shelton said the Tea Party needs to make an effort to deal with the racist signage and comments at some of its events and Skoda asked that Shelton renounce comments from the New Black Panther Party, which he did.

That's all good and well but it's not helping to solve any of the problems affecting African Americans, the poor and other minorities in this country.

In a sense, the NAACP resolution gave the Tea Party more significance. There is an attempt afoot to use the New Black Panther Party to further the political goals of the conservative movement. The NAACP should seek out and attack the link between conservative Republicans and the Tea Party movement.

On the flip side, I guess it's good to see two people in this country who disagree on an issue having a civil discussion. There's too much yelling and general ignorance coming from both sides in this country and not enough heard from moderate, commonsense people.

So, while I applaud the civility of the discussion, my ultimate reaction is, who cares?

Check out the conversation between the NAACP and Tea Party and let me know what you think.
