University of Texas Rechristens Dorm Named After Klansmen

Three cheers for the University of Texas governing board's decision to scrape the name of former Ku Klux Klan leaders off a dormitory building and nearby park.

Now, the school building named after Williams Stewart Simkins -- who taught law school at UT for 30 years and led a local chapter of the Klan -- and the park named after his brother, Judge Eldred Simkins, also a Klan member, will be renamed Creekside Residence Hall and Creekside Park, respectively.

Even though less than 5 percent of students on the UT Austin campus are black, school administrators understood that having the name of hate mongers on a university building and park makes no sense.

Too bad other jurisdictions don't see the light.

Every time I travel just a few miles south of suburban Washington, D.C., into Virginia, my senses are assaulted by school and roadway names dedicated to U.S. Civil War dead -- and not those from the winning side.

Okay, they might not have been card-carrying Klansmen in all cases. But they were cut from the same stained white cloth. They were fighting to preserve slavery. And don't forget their treason underscored the most traitorous episode of this nation's history.

Every now and then when a local controversy over naming a school after a Southern civil war hero pops up, you can count on hearing from some apologist for the rebel cause defending the honor of the South.

They were just fighting for there way of life, the Southern sympathizers say. They were just defending their honor, they reckon. They were fighting for their land, they conclude.

Country-fried garbage!

They fought against their own country. They divided the nation. They shed blood. And ultimately they lost. Southern civil war fighters shouldn't get streets like the Lee Highway named after civil war General Robert E. Lee named after them.

I always learned that the winners get the spoils.

Good going, University of Texas. Let's hope it's only a start.
