Three cheers for the University of Texas governing board's decision to scrape the name of former Ku Klux Klan leaders off a dormitory building and nearby park.
Now, the school building named after Williams Stewart Simkins -- who taught law school at UT for 30 years and led a local chapter of the Klan -- and the park named after his brother, Judge Eldred Simkins, also a Klan member, will be renamed Creekside Residence Hall and Creekside Park, respectively.
Even though less than 5 percent of students on the UT Austin campus are black, school administrators understood that having the name of hate mongers on a university building and park makes no sense.
Too bad other jurisdictions don't see the light.
Every time I travel just a few miles south of suburban Washington, D.C., into Virginia, my senses are assaulted by school and roadway names dedicated to U.S. Civil War dead -- and not those from the winning side.
Okay, they might not have been card-carrying Klansmen in all cases. But they were cut from the same stained white cloth. They were fighting to preserve slavery. And don't forget their treason underscored the most traitorous episode of this nation's history.
Every now and then when a local controversy over naming a school after a Southern civil war hero pops up, you can count on hearing from some apologist for the rebel cause defending the honor of the South.
They were just fighting for there way of life, the Southern sympathizers say. They were just defending their honor, they reckon. They were fighting for their land, they conclude.
Country-fried garbage!
They fought against their own country. They divided the nation. They shed blood. And ultimately they lost. Southern civil war fighters shouldn't get streets like the Lee Highway named after civil war General Robert E. Lee named after them.
I always learned that the winners get the spoils.
Good going, University of Texas. Let's hope it's only a start.

Good to see some of our White brothers and sisters take a vote to get that type of mess off the College dorms and park at U T.

I agree they shouldn't name a University building after a hate monger. Instead they should name the building after a race monger like Sharpton, Jackson, or the NAACP.

African Americans have been the victims of racism and hatred ever since being forcibly brought here for the express purpose of free labor. I hope we do not allow the hate baters and the hate mongers to tie up our energies on their bottomless ignorance. We need to be strong fathers and strong mothers which will result in producing strong children. We need to gain political power and economic power which is best attained through the process of obtaining a good education. Racism is here to stay. It got its roots in the false notion that G-d is white. Not only G-d but the angels, the disciples, the apostles, the saints and even the olive complexion Jesus was made to look Caucasian. How can one of the Caqucasian race feel equal to those outside of their race when their race is portrayed in the divine family? This idea of a white G-d feeds in the Caucasian an artificial sense of superiority and feeds non Caucasians a spirit of inferiority. Its truly evil because it does not register in the concious mind as much as it dwells in the sub-conciousness of the masses. I strongly believe this is why the Bible commands "Thou shall not make any graven images". G-d is wise enough to know that when people place color into the idea of G-d race conciousness has its start. We are but one humanity because when I went to the doctor a week ago he did not pull out the African American medical book. Why? Because we are all just human beings created by the Lord of the Worlds as one.

How sad that political correctness and race hustling won out. Those gentlemen being in the KKK did not make them "hate mongers". The KKK is equivalent to BV today ... the KKK represented a white Christian America, BV represents black people. If the KKK was racist, then BV is racist.
As a matter of fact, if you look at the posts on Stormfront, they are identical to the black racists that post on BV, except that you have to interchange the words "black" and "white".
The difference is, blacks are allowed and even ecouraged to bet away with their racism, whites are called hate mongers if they display their racism.

How dare you describe the KKK as white christian americans. Just because they advertise themselves as God's followers does not mean they're. That is an insult to the entire white community who love the Lord with their whole hearts.
