Suicide Bombers Responsible for Uganda World Cup Final Bombing Tragedy

Police have reported that there is more evidence to suggest that the bombings that happened in Uganda on July 11, the night of the World Cup final, were carried out by two suicide bombers.

Two as-yet-unidentified and unclaimed heads, thought to belong to the suicide bombers, have been found as well as a suicide vest which was found in a disco hall.

Interpol and the FBI are working with Ugandan law enforcement officials to trace the identity of both individuals who would have been part of Al-Shabab, the militant Somali group which has claimed responsibility for the attacks. So far, approximately 20 suspects have been detained, several of whom are of Pakistani origin.

Suicide bombings have been growing in number in recent years, having grown from a 1980's average of fewer than five per year to 180 per year between 2000 and 2005 and up to 460 in 2005, from 81 suicide attacks in 2001. It also seems to be spreading out across the globe.

Terrorism is supposed to strike fear into the hearts of people and the idea of a person walking around with explosives strapped to them, clearly prepared to die in the process of killing others, is chilling.

While governments fight wars, little is done to actually change the conditions that give rise to terrorism and to work on shifting the mindsets of those who see it as a viable way to have their causes heard.

This, rather than retaliation or attacks or even purely counter-terrorism, needs to be the way forward. Terrorism is created from a mindset and way of seeing the world in which one can only win by hurting another. This is a backwards and deeply dangerous ideology which only serves to cause further damage to the world, and that ultimately serves nobody, including the terrorists themselves.

It does not help that America is currently fighting wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. How can one tell terrorists not to harm others, when that is precisely what is done in the name of 'war'? Already it is being said that Uganda is preparing for 'war against terrorists'. But surely it is such things that led to terrorism in the first place?

More effort must be made to bring peace to the world.
