Sarah Palin Erroneously Calls Kodiak Largest U.S. Island

After a week of widespread ridicule after using the non-word "refudiate" several times, Palin again draws attention with a blatant error involving the state where she was once governor.

In a Facebook post endorsing New Hampshire Republican Senatorial candidate Kelly Ayotte, Sarah Palin incorrectly calls Alaska's Kodiak Island the largest island in the United States.

Although many of her Tea Party supporters never made it through high school geography (or high school, for that matter) and will undoubtedly think that Kodiak is a company that makes disposable cameras, the fact remains that Palin got it wrong.

Kodiak, an island off the coast of Alaska, is not the largest island in United States. In fact, the Big Island of Hawaii is 4,021 square miles, about 440 square miles larger than Kodiak, where Palin and her family plan to campaign this week for Ayotte.

She stated on her Facebook Page:

"Todd, Willow, and I are headed out to Kodiak and Afognak to meet with logging families on the forested islands. As we work and sightsee on America's largest island we'll get to view more majestic bears, so now is a good time to draw attention to the political equivalent of the species.

It's my honor to endorse a Granite State "mama grizzly" who has broken barriers, fought off and locked up criminals, and battled all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court to protect the rights of New Hampshire parents – and won!"

Oh, boy.

You have to wonder, with all that money, how Palin could be that misinformed.
Perhaps this is a larger movement to avoid any acknowledgment of Hawaii as a state in an effort to pander to the ultra-nutso "birther" movement. If they can ignore Hawaii as a state, they can ignore Barack Obama as president. Was her omission a deliberate political strategy or just ignorance? I'm not quite sure which one is worse. Or, as Palin would say, worser.

As if getting her geography all jacked up wasn't enough, Palin adds that Ayotte won a battle with the the U.S. Supreme Court. That is also not true.

As state attorney general, Ayotte defended a law requiring parental notification for teenagers seeking abortions. In response to the legal challenge by Ayotte, the U.S. Supreme Court remanded the case back to the lower courts, where it was ultimately repealed. In other words, if I were speaking Internet, the translation would be "epic fail."

Palin adopts a revisionist history regarding Ayotte's legal challenge, conveniently leaving out the fact that the law Ayotte argued for was eventually repealed. Does Palin NOT have Google?

But who's really surprised? It's just the continuation of a "campaign" by the Tea Party to promote its messages and the truth, and common sense be damned. Reality be damned. Fact-checking be damned.

Palin, you have got to do better.

Kelly Ayotte is among seven candidates seeking the GOP nomination for the seat being vacated by Republican Sen. Judd Gregg. Rep. Paul Hodes is unopposed in the Democratic primary.

Although I don't know a thing about this Hodes character, I somehow have the sudden urge to send him a check.
