Obama To Host African Youth At D.C. Forum

Fifty years of African independence will be celebrated next month as President Barack Obama hosts a forum for more than 100 young African leaders.

The event, Aug. 3-5, will feature the president hosting a town hall meeting with a group of young Africans to discuss how their countries should best develop over the next half-century. The African representatives come from civil society and the private sector of more than 40 sub-Saharan nations.

Obama's care and concern for the land of his father's birth is great to see. But anyone expecting to see immediate results from the meeting is fooling himself.

The true value of the gathering might not seen for a decade or more, as these young leaders take their places of leadership in their own countries and hopefully use Obama's model of inclusion and change to guide their politics.

Obama will likely be gone from the national political scene by then but his influence will hopefully live on.
