Dowd's position can be understood and is certainly accurate. On racial matters, the Obama Administration has been like a monkey throwing darts at a wall. They address the issue so sloppily that you sometimes wish they wouldn't touch it all, but not touching the issue has now become the default strategy for an administration that positions itself to patronize the racists of our nation. Obama has convinced himself that he can be a "stealthy black man," convincing white folks that he's not really as black as the rest of us. The truth is that a stealthier black man might have been a white woman named Hillary Clinton.
Black America has not, as of yet, seen many direct benefits to having our first black president. The symbolism of Obama's achievement has been muted by virtually no substantive progress on issues that matter to African Americans, including unemployment and mass incarceration. We've seen our concerns put to the side, and the president has only stepped out of his shell on a racial matter when it affected one of his Ivy League cronies, Dr. Henry Louis Gates.
In all fairness to President Obama, the question becomes the following: How much more could he do and still have a chance to be re-elected?
It must be considered that the size of the black voting base may not be strong enough for the president to do more on matters of race. Additionally, his approval ratings continue to plummet across the board. If Obama were to alienate white, female and Latino voters, he surely wouldn't be re-elected, but an alternative question is whether or not he should silence himself on matters that affect our community just to get something he may never obtain in the first place.
What good is it to have power if you aren't going to use it for a productive purpose?
Obama's problem is the same challenge experienced by millions of black corporate managers, professors, lawyers and doctors every single day. Black people are told to "play the game" and be quiet on issues that relate to race - all so we can achieve the status symbols that make us feel validated.
Those of us who behave as the "good slave" and do what we are told are sometimes rewarded with promotions that make our mamas proud, high salaries to feed our addictive consumption habits and the "good black person" label that is so valuable within many organizations (Syracuse University identified me as a bad black man long ago).
On the other hand, many of us sell our souls and get nothing in return. When it's all said and done, however, the majority of those who've made this selfish sacrifice end up feeling like the $2 prostitute who wasn't even paid at the end of the night. You give away your integrity and your enemies attack you for being weak. You find that your own personal gain comes at a huge price relative to what you didn't do for your community. Your life of promise becomes effectively meaningless and the world never knows you were here.
The simple point here is that if President Obama sees his election as being important for African Americans in any light, he must be willing to make some kind of sacrifice. He must also realize that sometimes sacrifice comes at a cost. Trying to appease Right Wing conservatives while still benefiting the black community is like having one foot in New York and the other one in California. Obama simply can't be a good enough politician to believe that he can make everyone happy at the same time, which is what he's been trying to do thus far.
The black community must encourage President Obama to make this sacrifice by not only showing up to vote, but by also setting higher standards for ourselves and what we expect from our elected officials. Right now, Barack Obama has tremendous and unwavering black support and an auto-saved position in every black history book to ever be written.
In fact, in many black living rooms across America, Obama's picture is on the wall right next to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Jesus. The descendants of slaves can sometimes have self-esteem so low that we will trade White House validation for almost anything. With black folks in his corner, not holding him accountable in any way, does the Obama Administration have any incentive to do anything for the African-American community? The answer is a resounding "No."

What?!
Dr.Watkins you said a mouthful...and though I agree with some of your points...I beg to defer on others...First and formost, have you seen the amount of issues on this man's plate?
I mean times have changed..how many prior Presidents have been under this much pressure....since the Great Depression?
And yes, the black community also needs attention..but isn't that the result of so much neglected issues by president after president, years after years, history upon history
We all know if not that's Mr.Obama was black himself, would we even bring this issue up? It's never been the central issues with previous presidents...So why is it now just this president's responsibility all of a sudden?
Believe me his job is no cake walk...we can all have our opinons, comments and suggestions...but until you walk in his shoes...you will never know what it takes!

Why are you willing to take a back seat? I do not see one tangible benefit that black people have received. Upper middle class black people have benefitted by having something to talk about at their "wine and cheese" parties or their "wear white only" parties, but other than that, black people have been bamboozled and used again!! I predicted this would happen so i am not surprised.

Dr. Watkins, I am beginning to question whether Pres. Obama can do for the Black community what we want/need him to do. After all Pres. Obama was raised in the White world, and he may not have the passion of the Black community to be moved to do anything. If Black unemployment at the rate of 15% doesn't move him to do or say anything what more can we expect. At this time he doesn't seem to want to make the sacrifice in regards to African American.

I'm with you Boyce!
I am a young black male looking for a black leader willing to step up and provide the leadership, cultural bondage, economic tools, educational advancements, and (in my heart) makes me proud to be black. Along with Boyce Watkins, Tavis Smiley, Cornell West, and others, I am growing more dissapointed in Barack's sense of black accountability.
The beginning of his presidency, I understood that in the house of representatives Barack will need some republican votes to help get bills passed. I also understand that he has to cater to those wealthy individuals and societies who help put him in office. He see's that obstacle, as an excuse, to play nice guy with republicans, extremists, and conservatives who want to see him fail. Time and time again, they go online, in front of cameras, or blog online to let the world know that whatever Mr. President is proposing - they (the right) are against it. Barack (to me) doesn't have enough heart to stand up and makes strides for black people. We (black people) find ourselves stranded because we are the backbone of American and yet, our culture, dignity, talents, and achievements are often set aside for those who have more of the world's control, so they can "pimp" the benfits of our world contributions. To make matter's worse, when Mr. President did eventually speak in front of black people, he mentions that "black people have a huge challenge in front of us, but to get to being the people we can be, don't allow difficult challenges hinder you from being the best person you can become"(those may not be the exact words). Get down to the point, someone needs to find a way to open Barack Obama's eye's and get him to understand that we are not who we are because we seem to be "victim's of bad luck", it is because people like you(Mr. President) who are in position of power to make all the right changes, choose to play within the rules of the "supremists world" and now it is apparent that you and democrats don't have the integrity to stand up and fight for black america's needs.....In my heart, a leader is one will put his money, where his mouth is and Barack is a part of the White House, not black american's agenda.
Me and a buddy of mine realized (before the election) that in order for black people to have thriving communities anywhere, we must stop demanding privaleges from opposing ethinicies and create an unified world of our own, period. So, Barack - you help remind black people why we can't depend on government and as long as you continue your ways, results for you will become harder to achieve.

Ok first of all Obama is not God!!! Secondly, Obama has shown educational advancements. He, himself, is a product of educational advancements. Did he not go to college? Then law school? Did he not become president? He is showing leadership that the black community needs to see such as a black man can become more than just a basketball or football player or a rapper or a thug on the street. What do you and the black community want Obama to do? Magically give black people money and homes? Put all his efforts on fixing the black community and forget about the rest of the country? Oh I get it, you want Obama to give black people what they havent earned? Is that it? Because that what you and everyone else keeps talking about...When is Obama gonna help black people? I got a better question for you...when are black people gonna help themselves? When are they going to realize they have to work to get what they want. They have to get their priorities in order and stop thinking they everyone needs to help them except themselves. Electing Obama was not and is not a quick fix for the black community. You cant help people that dont want to help themselves. Stop expecting Obama to be the savior for black people. He has real problems on his hands such as national health care, this economic crisis we are in, cleaning up the oil spill, fixing immigration, and cleaning up the other messes that Bush left on his plate. Black people we are not opressed and havent been for a while now, it time to get off your butt and work hard for what you want. Finish high school, go to college or trade school, learn a trade/ get a degree, start a career and stop making reckless choices. Become the solution to your own problems. It just takes hard work but it always pays off in the end.

"It must be considered that the size of the black voting base may not be strong enough for the president to do more on matters of race."
I could, ahhh, probably go for what you're talking about... but the jews aren't but 2% of the population, and they fill virtually every possition in the Obama's administration!
You can't say Obama's done poor jobon RACE, where it concerns jews! He back-tracked and flip-flopped on non-proliferation of nuclear weapons summitt in Brazil! On behalf of the nuclear armed Zionist entity!
He supported Israel's raid on the peace flotilla in international waters! Didn't say a mumbling word about Israeli massacre of Gaza! Netanyahu continued to build settlements in Joe Bidens face!
Why hell, nuclear strapped Israel and Obama are pearched, ready to attack a nation the size of Conneticut, Iran, because they desire nuclear energy for peaceful means.
Resolution 1553 provides explicit support for military strikes against Iran! Iran hasn't attack any nation for at least 200 years. Israel and America be invading and fighting, EVERY BODY, all the time!!!
Obama supports the same policy as Bush on the rogue state of jews! His commitment was not and will never be negotiable concerning Netanyahu and the Zionist occupiers! No matter how many times they violate international laws, assassinations, U.N. resolutions,Obama supports the Apartheid regime all the way to hell!
FUXK BLACK AAMERICA!Obama has donned his yarmulke!
Obama is all about race! The jewish race!
