Any Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) supporters waiting for leader-in-waiting Rev. Bernice King to pull the struggling civil rights group from the abyss will have to wait a little longer.
King announced she will not take over the SCLC next month as previously scheduled.
It appears King is waiting out the court decision to see which of the two factions will win the legal fight. The factions both believe that they are the rightful owners of the organization and are scheduled to hold two separate conventions in Atlanta, where the group is headquartered.
While some hold out hope that the SCLC will reclaim its role of civil rights champion for blacks, King's delay in taking control of the group was anticipated by most observers and makes sense.
Though elected in October, King has stayed silent amid the court fighting.
The latest twist in the sad SCLC saga has done nothing to change my view that the group has lived out its usefulness.
I have no doubt King wants to breathe new life in to the group co-founded by her father Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., but fighting the civil rights battles facing black people today will take strategic planning, visionary leadership and a solid and engaged core of national support.
Little indicates that the SCLC has any of those essential qualities needed to help black America.
