Wyclef Jean steps toward Haitian presidential race

Where there's smoke, there's fire. According to Reuters, entertainer and Haitian humanitarian Wyclef Jean has been in the news as of late promoting his intentions for a possible presidential run in his homeland of Haiti.

Last week, Jean was said to be in the small nation's capital dotting all of the I's and crossing any T's in preparation.

The former Fugees member was reportedly fingerprinted and filled out all of the paperwork to apply for the country's highest office. Even still, Jean is still not officially registered, and the deadline for submission of his documents is Aug. 7.

There is a rumor that the 37-year-old Grammy winner will officially announce his candidacy this week on CNN before flying back to Haiti to enter the race. The current president of Haiti is René Garcia Préval. The Haitian presidential elections are scheduled for Nov. 28 of this year.

Oddly enough, Jean's uncle, Raymond Joseph, who is Haiti's ambassador to the United States, told the Christian Science Monitor last week that he might be running for the position of president of his homeland, too. He also dispelled any rumors that his nephew could be running for the impoverished nation's presidency.

Joseph did state, however, that the two of them would never run against each other:

"No, I wouldn't say running against; I would say running parallel," he told a CSM reporter. "We are family. And we won't allow politics to divide [us]."

Jean credits his uncle for setting him on his musical career path and has been quoted as saying that he wished his uncle would run for the presidential office. He has also stated publicly that he would be an avid supporter of his uncle and would campaign alongside him for a place in the presidential cabinet.

I guess we'll all be front and center when or if Jean decides to run for the Haitian presidential post. Either way, the clock is ticking -- six days to go.

In the meantime, check out Jean's 'If I was President':
