Dr. Cornel West apparently has a bone to pick with President Barack Obama. Over time, the good Dr. West has become increasingly vocal in his critique of Obama, and even went as far as to say that Obama treated him "like a cub scout" when he allegedly refused to address West's concerns about the administration's behavior:
"Well, I'll tell you, I had not talked to my dear brother since the Martin Luther King gathering in South Carolina, and very briefly Super Tuesday. But he did come and make a beeline to me after his speech on I think it was Thursday morning in Washington, D.C. I hadn't seen him for two and a half weeks, and he made a beeline to me, though, brother, and he was deeply upset. He talked to me like I was a cub scout, and he was a pack master. You know what I mean?
I said, well, my mother and father raised me right. I respect my dear brother, but I don't like to be demeaned and humiliated in that way, and I didn't get a chance to respond to him. And I hope maybe at some time we can. But it was very, it was a very ugly kind of moment, it seems to me, and that disturbs me because then it raises the question for me: Does he have a double standard for black critics as opposed to white critics?"
It's no surprise that West would be on the outs with Obama. The president has an intense loyalty to Harvard University and former Harvard University President Lawrence Summers, the man who has proven that he has almost no appreciation for black scholarship.
I, too, find myself irritated that Obama maintains such strong allegiance to those who don't respect the African American community or care to spend any time helping us address unique social and economic challenges.
A broader point to be made about the rift between professor West and Obama is one of class: Cornel West is not just a champion for black people. He is also a champion for the poor, the powerless and the downtrodden. Dr. West's constituency is almost directly opposed to the latte-sipping, Martha's Vineyard-vacationing, Harvard University-attending folks who run with President Obama. This reminds us that fighting for black people can be very different from fighting for poor black people: Obama almost always stands up for black folks as long as they either went to Harvard or have millions of dollars in the bank.
Obama has chosen an unqualified woman, Elena Kagan, for the Supreme Court, primarily because she is associated with Harvard. He spoke up for Henry Louis Gates last year, not because he was a black man, but because he was a Harvard professor who asked for his help. Obama lives among the elite, and Cornel West is an academic version of Jeremiah Wright. The relationship between West and Obama was doomed from the very beginning, given their glaring conflict of interest. For West to be surprised at Obama's behavior is like an LA Laker getting angry that the Denver Nuggets player put the ball in the other basket. My point is that Obama and West were never on the same team to begin with.
Another speculative point that can be made about Cornel West's outspoken opposition to Obama's policies is one that relates to Tavis Smiley. I've always been of the opinion that Tavis has personal reasons for accentuating his political disappointment with President Obama. I honestly believe that had Obama been more open with Smiley and provided him with the same opportunities he has received from Hillary Clinton, Smiley would not have been so harsh in his attacks.
Cornel West, being a great friend of Tavis, has been positioned within a camp of individuals who might be disappointed with Barack Obama no matter what he does. I don't believe West dislikes Obama as much as Smiley does. West's criticism lies far more with divisions in ideology than with personal differences.
The point is that our analysis of the president should be balanced with solutions, as well as a realistic understanding of the pressures he endures while trying to run the most powerful nation on earth. Being president is never as idealistic as we'd like to believe.
All the while, the notion that we must deal with Obama with kid gloves solely because we are happy to have a black man in the White House is absolute nonsense.
Falling in love with a politician is like asking a prostitute to be faithful. We set ourselves up for disappointment when we relate to Obama with extreme emotion, while he deals with us using cold, calculated rationality. Professor West is correct that Obama manages his black critics differently from white ones. The differential treatment is likely because black people don't have enough votes to keep Obama in office, nor enough economic power to change his life the way other constituents can.
As a result, black folks remain at the back of the political bus, without regard to the color of the man in the Oval Office.

I'm with Goodnews and On Point with this one, C. West, T. Smiley, J. Jackson, B. Watkins, and M. Dyson are all Black men who aspire to have the presidential power of B. Obama. They're are worse than the white tea baggers, because the color of their skin camouflages the hateful agenda of those men, leaving some confused about their hidden agendas on sex, power, and money.
These sit around trying to do everything they can to exploit the circumstances surrounding our first Black President B. Obama all the while wishing they were him. Research who each one of the have sought a political, economic, and or educational notoriety President Obama has achieved. These haters want Obama to bow down to them because he is Black he must "go through them" and President Obama absolutely refuses to do so. Miraculously, one by one these men have been revealed as haters (J. Jackson and T. Smiley). T. Smiley thought he would be the Black presidential golden boy and his wife C. West, would be his first lady.
The truth of the matter is, we need grown Black men mentoring other young Black men! We need to keep our youth off the streets, off drugs, out of jails, in school, and out of the lovers arms sinful Black men. Did you know, twenty-five percent of Black men in this country are in the penal system, with an 85% recidivism rate. Ninety-five percent of the young boys, currently in jail, were on the streets between 10pm and 3am. Criticizing the Black President for being Black and having his own agenda, does not address my personal concerns about the plight of Black community!
The problem is far more reaching and much more fundamental. When did any of those men, who criticize the President, take their lucrative book royalties and start a national Black male mentoring and book scholarship program? I think T. Smiley, may be the only one.
My local school district has a 60% high school drop out rate. Most of these dropouts are Black and Latino boys! And if we keep thinking, it is all about who the President spoke to harshly, we have missed the boat! Who the-duck-cares Dr. C. West and Dr. B. Watkins, you ought to be ashamed of yourself to allow your egos to take over and cloud your thinking at such a high rate. The need for you to do something tangible for our community here. With President Obama in office, now is the most critical point in time to act. Will one million Black men, please man up ... please stand up! Black folks are dying, Black folks are starving, Black folks are unemployed, homeless, on drugs, in jail, or caught up in homosexual relationships as the norm at unprecedented rates, and you two men are worried about who spoke to whom like an "Eagle Scout"?
I don't need these leaders spending quality time, chasing men and sometimes women, writing pompous self-righteous books, and criticizing the President. The problems of the Black community are urgent. As one Blogger On Point wrote, 'Obama don't owe them a darn thing. And Boyce Watkins, because I hesitate to refer to you as Dr., because your articles do not reflect a level of scholarship that should stimulate intellectual debate, self-empowerment, edification, arouse social awareness or consciousness amongst your readers, but your articles are rather reduced to school yard gossip and elementary smut. Is the best you can produce as "black scholarship?" Then no wonder former Harvard President Summers have little regard - - because you and your boys are poor representation of black scholarship.'

I fully agree with Goodnews. I don't trust Cornell West or Tavis. I feel that Obama does what he can for us. Let's not forget he is president of America and not the NAACP. He can't just focus on the black community. If you listen to Cornell West talk, it tells you that he is just trying to be impressive. He likes to jump on the bandwagon. Research his speeches and you will fine he is not as liberal as he would have you believe.

That might be true if they did not already have fame & notoriety but I'm not so blind that I can't see some validity to some of their concerns and the concerns of other Obama critics. I have been a staunch Obama supporter from day one, and I recognize that much of the criticism directed at him is based on ignorance, and racism, but not all of it is. I realize Obama has to be tactful, but sometimes I wish he would show more backbone and stand up to his opponents both in the GOP as well as his own party. He has accomplished a great deal in his short time in office, but he has done a poor job in making that clear to the American public. I wish that he had been more forceful when he had a majority in the House & Senate, because if he continues to allow his opponents to lie to the American public with out fighting back, now that he has lost his majority, the groundwork may well be in place to make him a one-term president. I believe that would truly be a tragedy. I still support him, but my support for him and anyone else is not blind. No doubt there are those who are "haters" out there with the crab barrel mentality that makes them try to pull anyone back who tries to move onward and upward, but not every critic is a hater. There is such a thing as constructive criticism. If we can't criticize him constructively with hopes that he'll do better for the poor, because there really is no middle class, then we truly have no hope, because the GOP and the tea party certainly are not the answer. Can any rational person really visualize a Pres. Sarah Palin?? I think not.

Dr Boyce since when has who can get you into power been just by the majority, you seem to forget that in every election the black vote and the hispanic vote has always been the key in deciding who is elected as president, to shun black people because they are not as rich as whites is a travisty, may i remind you that many many whites did not vote for president obama particularly in the south, and if hiliary clinton did not give up the race he would not be in power know, the president has gone out of his way to reward the rich, the gay rights, the opera's and others but not african americans, president obama really does think he is something special know and his ego has got the best of him, to bad he can't take critism from african americans who have supported him and those who have not, it is nice to always here good things about ourselves but sometimes we need to get a grip and take critism, just like Mrs Sherrod said come to the south i.e. let me educated you and show you how people down here live, all mrs sherrod is saying come and see real racism in the south and see what we have to deal with on a day to day basis, i believe president obama was only running for the whitehouse to be the first black president and he could only do that by marrying a black sister, he doesn't feel that he owes us anything, it's good that smiley and others call him out and yes he does talk to us differently than he would whites , i am really surprised if he had that type of attitude why the hell he married black?
