The niece of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. addressed a crowd at a National Organization for Marriage rally last weekend in Atlanta. Dr. Alveda King (pictured) passionately addressed the issue of same-sex marriage, stating that it would lead to "extinction" and "genocide."
King, who is a politician, activist and author, is the daughter of the late slain civil rights leader A.D. King.
A former Georgia House of Representatives member, King is known for speaking her mind about controversial issues, such as abortion and gay marriage. She has been a pro-life crusader and vehemently opposes same-sex marriage.
King addressed a crowd of attendees, who were outnumbered by protesters. She spoke out about her family's commitment to traditional matrimonial values and even claimed that her uncle, Dr. King, and his "lovely wife," Coretta Scott King, were also on board with this belief system.
King failed to mention, however, that the late Coretta Scott King actually supported gay marriage publicly and was even a speaker at a 1996 Gay Pride festival in Atlanta. Back in 2004, she called gay marriage a "civil rights issue" and even denounced a proposed constitutional amendment that would ban it. She was once quoted as saying:
"Gay and lesbian people have families, and their families should have legal protection, whether by marriage or civil union. A constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages is a form of gay bashing, and it would do nothing at all to protect traditional marriages."
Perhaps Alveda King should take a page from her aunt's teachings?

Stand firm people! the new gay agenda prop 8 wants to join their civil rights with are hard earned black civil rights MLK, you see folks they to want to say they are an oppressed people dah? they choose that lifestyle, and besides how many white homosexuals are pulled over by the cops because he is gay dah, when they come with this agenda i hope you will send them packing! if we say no it is not same as our black civil rights struggle which is on going their reply will be african americans are the real hombophonics and RACIST you only have to take a look at their churchs and what they preach, my reply then go and sell your agenda to the white evangelical churchs of america and see what their response is then? do you think they will do that? they want to give us another new label and attach another sterotype to black people are racist and homophobic! as if things weren't bad enough for us no jobs, being pulled over by racist cops etc etc stay clear my people their are heading to a church near you! if they haven't already contacted the naacp and the president and even Rev Al Sharpton to get there backing and sell it to the african community, why do you think Kegan is know in the supreme courts to re-write the 14th amendment and perhaps re-write the whole constition for that matter she might even link up with old clarence thomas who has already stripped away hard earned civil rights gains, remember J Egar hoover who hated blacks look he up if you are younger see what he did for black people!
In fact most of these prop 8 supporters serve in government tiny though they may be they could even be your own boss, that is why they want you to get on the bus with them on this one other wise people you too might soon be out of a job?
God, the absolute vitriol in your comment just SCREAMS Christianity, doesn't it? Clearly you've never really read your precious book. So gays being murdered because they're gay isn't a hate crime? Honey, if you start claiming that, then a good portion of the African-American fight for civil rights can be thrown right out the window. Gays may not be profiled at traffic stops, but they had bars raided, and in several states can still be arrested for having sex. Be glad you don't have to worry about what you do with a loved one in your bedroom (though with your attitude, I can't actually believe anyone would ever sleep with you). What have gays ever done to blacks to deserve your ire? You bring up a good point - I think most gays probably would call those who oppose them homophobes, at least for the idiotic reasons you give to oppose something like gay marriage. If you fail to see the similarities between what the gays are experiencing now in their fight for civil rights and what African-Americans went through in their struggle, it's because you don't know how to reason. Then again, Christianity typically has that problem. I think the bigger issue here is that like the rest of evangelical Christianity, you think you have a right in the political process. Guess what? The Constitution already has the wording to allow gays the same rights as others, and it's in the 14th amendment. Blacks don't have some exclusive right to that amendment, and if you think they do, then you aren't a racist - you're a black supremacist and a hypocrite. I think the funniest part of your entire comment is that it exemplifies the entirety of the evangelical Christian community in how they respond to these issues without even reading enough to be knowledgeable about the case. For your views, you should be *supporting* Prop 8. Since most Christians don't even read their own book, I guess you can't be faulted for not reading up on other things you claim to know, either.
Ruth Manuel Logan is dead wrong. Same sex marriage will not make the population extinct. There are plenty of opposite sex copulations going on in America that will keep the human race going. There are also many children that could be adopted by a loving same sex family. I am shocked a civil rights leader would abandon the same sex community, and denigrate their inalienable right to marry. Not to long ago blacks were property and it was against the law for them to marry. Not to long ago blacks could not marry out of their race. The only people that would want God's blessing on their marriage are God fearing people. She has no moral authority to stop same sex marriage. God judges mankind, not Christians on earth. The bigotry she has exhibited saying that opposite sex marriages are better than same sex marriages is misplaced. They used the same rational about mixed babies, that they would be harmed, now a mixed baby is the first black president of the United States. How can she say that when over 50% of opposite sex marriages end in divorce, or when people get married and divorced over and over again. How dare black people oppress another segment of society when we were oppressed on the same lines.
Alie, your response has nothing to do with same sex marriage and whether you should vote for it or not. You say don't let them join the civil rights movement because they are not like us. Were the Jewish people or other white people that marched with us like us? No. They marched with us, because it was the right thing to do. The Federal Court has said that marriage is an inalienable right. An inalienable right cannot be voted away by the majority. Unless the Supreme Court changes it, same sex marriage will be a right, and there is nothing you can do about it. Also on a political note most gay people are Democrats and you are turning away a crucial demographic to get Democrats elected to office. How dare black people oppress another demographic the way we were oppressed. We could not marry because we were property. We could not marry white people because the children would be messed up. Wake up black people and think. Morally, God judges, Christians do not judge. Christians preach the gospel, live right and spread acceptence and love.
there's so much ignorance in your statement that it's hard to know where to start. but we see this sort of thing a lot, don't we? "oh, gays and lesbians...that's a white thing." please--you are so blind. remember several years ago when so many blacks had the attitude that HIV/AIDS was a "white thing?" and because we ignored the Truth for so long, sooo many african-americans were infected by HIV while we said to ourselves, "that's a white thing." the hundreds of thousands of dead blacks from HIV would disagree, i'm sure.
Got a question Alie, Do you know anyone that's gay? It appears that you don't. No one choose to be gay. Take the time to get to know someone that's gay and you would see a different side. By the way am quiet sure that you have a gay friend and don't even know it. They don't trust you.
TO VICKISS, IF YOU HAVE ANY EDUCATION OR SENSE OF REAL HISTORY OR EVEN READ THE BIBLE YOU WOULD KNOW THAT THERE WERE AFRICAN CHRISTIANS BEFORE EUROPEAN ONES. IT AINT NO "WHITE RELIGION". DUMBASS.
Biased hatred and senseless vitrolic psycho babel. You should be ashamed. Progressive voices are reigning supreme. Alveda cleverly left out Mrs. King's position. How convenient. God is love, not 'phobic. Using wedge issues like this is counterproductive.
Alie, I don't think you are black, a Christian, or married. And you know nothing about the struggle for /Civil Rights. You are a plant on this board trying to fool people. And a hard up one at that!
