The niece of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. addressed a crowd at a National Organization for Marriage rally last weekend in Atlanta. Dr. Alveda King (pictured) passionately addressed the issue of same-sex marriage, stating that it would lead to "extinction" and "genocide."
King, who is a politician, activist and author, is the daughter of the late slain civil rights leader A.D. King.
A former Georgia House of Representatives member, King is known for speaking her mind about controversial issues, such as abortion and gay marriage. She has been a pro-life crusader and vehemently opposes same-sex marriage.
King addressed a crowd of attendees, who were outnumbered by protesters. She spoke out about her family's commitment to traditional matrimonial values and even claimed that her uncle, Dr. King, and his "lovely wife," Coretta Scott King, were also on board with this belief system.
King failed to mention, however, that the late Coretta Scott King actually supported gay marriage publicly and was even a speaker at a 1996 Gay Pride festival in Atlanta. Back in 2004, she called gay marriage a "civil rights issue" and even denounced a proposed constitutional amendment that would ban it. She was once quoted as saying:
"Gay and lesbian people have families, and their families should have legal protection, whether by marriage or civil union. A constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages is a form of gay bashing, and it would do nothing at all to protect traditional marriages."
Perhaps Alveda King should take a page from her aunt's teachings?

That's a good point. However in our country there are legal benefits to being married.
What I see happening from all of this gay marriage controversy is the legal benefits will be eroded to a point where it doesn't matter if you're married or not. Then there won't be any reason to fight for it or against it - "marriage" will just have a social definition, not a legal one.
Actually, if you'd studied any other cultures, you would know that marriage predates Christianity. Funny, but societies allowing homosexual marriage did, too.
Because they believe in God and want God to bless their union. They believe God will. Just because your belief is different does not mean they should have to stop. No one but God knows what happens to us after we die. People on earth have beliefs, but no one knows. Those beliefs are called their religion. People can disagree with their beliefs, or religions. That is why America is great.
You must remember Our Almight God made everyone and he knew what we was going to be before we were conceived. We all was made in his image. Think about that.
@Jordan...That is what you are missing, its not about what you study its what you believe. In no way did I even hint to the fact that Christianity predates marriage (did you read my post?). Marriage is found in Genesis, the book of beginnings, long before established Judaism, Islam, or any other religion....and established by God. Ive studued more religions than you could ever know. Its not about knowledge in this case, it is about belief. You either believe God and His Word or you dont, period.
Your initial post claimed that marriage was founded in the Bible. That account would have been written how many centuries later? You can believe what you want about someone writing it with direction from God, and that it is somehow true. Anthropological data from other parts of the world predates when the Dead Sea Scrolls would have been written, however, and that data was taken with a much more objective mindset. Believe what you want to believe, but studying religions through a seminary or theological school gives a rather one-sided view, especially when it sounds as though it was a Christian one.
@Jordan...I hear you brother and I love a good debate but you have to stop assuming or putting people in a box. Just because I am a Christian does not mean I am not open minded or educated. Nor does that mean I agree with everything that is done in the name of Christianity. "Theology or Seminary school..."??? I have a Masters in Sociology, with Bachelors in both Soc and English. Trust me, those did not come from a seminary or theological school...lol At any rate, I do hear and accept your point...respect.
You call yourself a Reverend? People were married way before the bible was ever written, and way before Christianity was established. You sound just as dumb as MLK's niece.
