A police deputy in South Carolina has been fired after being videotaped breaking the leg of a shackled inmate who offered no resistance, but he should face stiffer penalties if justice is truly served.
As a fellow officer looks on, inmate Charles Shelley is shown standing outside a police van while Sgt. Oddie Tribble repeatedly strikes him in the lower leg with a short baton. The officer then grabbed a longer rod and continued to beat Shelley in the same portion of the lower leg in an obvious attempt to break a bone.
The sergeant was successful.
Shelley, who had been arrested on an outstanding warrant, suffered a broken leg and needed stitches.
Absolutely nothing Shelley did or said could justify the sickening beating administered by Tribble.
When are those in positions of authority going to stop abusing their power? There needs to be severe consequences for anyone caught mishandling their power.
Whether it is the officers involved in the Danziger Bridge case, where officers shot innocent people after Hurricane Katrina, or the police officer caught repeatedly using a stun gun on a schoolteacher for no good reason, there is a ubiquitous understanding that officers can act badly and still go unpunished.
Federal authorities are investigating whether Shelley's civil rights were violated. Anyone who looks at the video knows the answer is an unqualified yes.

Truly barbaric...and the other guard who watched it all...should be punished, too....beyond termination of their jobs.

Sargent Tribble was wrong in beating this poor inmate. He should have just pulled out his gun and shot him in the head. Case closed.

beating a cuffed inmate AGAIN.. who ALLOWED these people to be prison GUARDS? This guard should have been fired..and I hope the inmate's family gets a good lawyer for the civil suit against this guard and the prison system.. I wonder why most of the prison guards or jail guards are black males..is it because we have barbaric violence tendencies? The only way to address any issue that is not going ones way is to be violent? OR MURDER?..I'm starting to believe what is said about US as a people is TRUE..if so a large percentage of US is HELL bound or we will cease to exist as a people of ANY source to advance into a race respected as race of american citizens.. I know, I know, most of this black generation don't believe in a WHITE MAN's God(laughing-idiotic)..but what they do believe IN is anything but GOD- and their beliefs ISN'T helping our communities..basically its destroying the black communities across this nation..

Most of these prison guard are black because the white man knows that if he gives the black man/woman so authority over their own kind, they will be more vicious and mean. These so-called prison guards are the white man's dog.

This type of barbaric beatings are more and more common place. Who made this man judge and jury. Both of the deputies should be punished Tribble should go to jail for deadly assualt and the other for obstruction of justice. I pray that they both get put in a cell with Big Bubba and he beats them up with his stick. And when he finishes he makes the both of them community property. And the next time you see those guards they will have their eyebrows arched and toenails painted. And the days of anal retentive will be a thing of the far off past for the both of those bastards.
